A spare wheel was an option on my new car ... one that we went for.  Just as well ... the car is about 14 weeks old and we have had two punctures on the same tyre already!  First one the tyre had to be replaced, second time it could be repaired.  Hadn't had a puncture for about ten years prior to this.

Mine has no spare, just a compressor and gunk, this was of no use before xmas when a sheet of plywood flew off a lorry and took the front tyre out (also the bumper etc!) the tyre had a 1" hole in it, the RAC came out, took the wheel to the lease cars recommended Kwick fit 1/2hr away(even though a tyre depot was round the corner) returned with new tyre and refitted...perfect! Good thing was that I was only just round the corner from my destination otherwise the 4 hr wait would have been a pain!!

Hi,

The front tyres on my wife's year old car were down to 3mm, with snow being forcast. I persuaded her to fit new tyres.

While in the tyre bay, I asked the fitter to let me keep one of the old tyres, so I could fit it to another wheel - when I found one. He wandered into a corner, came back with an old wheel. We checked it for similarity to the car's wheels, and tested it on a hub. He fitted our discarded tyre, and dropped it into the recess in the boot floor. Charged us £2.

So now she has a usable spare tyre, AND a can of snotty stuff. I painted the spare wheel red, so she will be reminded to not drive too far on it. That wheel and tyre have since been moved into her replacement car.

If you have alloy wheels, and go down this route, make sure that you have suitable wheel nuts for steel wheels.

good point the tyre fitter had to leave our peugeot 206 on bricks overnight when he came to the house because we did not have these.the spare was a steel one.
