The Towequipe website quotes £137 for the westfalia dedicated loom for the new 5 series and an extra £25 for the additional loom for fridge / battery charge facility. These kits include all relays etc etc.
Have used this supplier several times for dedicated wiring kits and these looms are original equipment kits as stated on their website.
The above just shows us all what the "stealers" rip us off for!
I have given the advice before in previous similar threads & worth repeating. Get it in writing on invoice that you require 'full 13pin caravan wiring' at time of purchase. You cannot expect car salesmen or workshop service receptionists to be fully conversant with individual towing requirements.
Admittedly loom has to be run from front to back of car requiring removal of trim etc, but simply plugs into loom at rear of car and connects to fusebox at front.
Cannot take more than an hour, have done this on several cars cannot imagine the BMW being any "harder".
You forgot the vat. ...But at least the op has their answer, an aftermarket loom is available & if a towbar fitting company will fit it, probably less than £100 unless a dealer download is required....so thread success.

It appears that this post is getting very much like 'Dragon's Den'. You initially ask for help but you didn't declare all the major facts as such, that it was actually a brand new car, then we find out after that it's not your car either but a company car which doesn't belong to you. Then you happen to criticise my comments saying that I think you are a mug for paying out ridiculous sums. Maybe I'm missing something here but I've heard enough and for that reason......I'm out!
Thats because it was irrelevant to the questions I was asking? I think you checked out of Charm school a little too early!!!!
This problem is far more reaching than some of you realise.
It happens on nearly all German built/designed cars. The europeans do not use a fridge supply and don't see why we should.
I had this problem first with a factory fitted tow bar back in 2001.(Ford Galaxy 2.8)
The dealer didn't have a clue.
Not only is the wiring missing from the loom, so are the pins from the socket.
I managed this as a DIY job with the aide of some wire, a fuse holder and a replacement 13 pin socket that I bought from a Merc dealer (they stocked them because they we getting the same problem and we doing the modifications)The socket on some of these models also contains a microswitch which ajusts the engine managemet software when the trailer is plugged in.
Ever since then I have had the towbard fitted by a towing expert and have not had further problems.
European caravanners run their fridges & charge their batteries while driving same as we do, they just have their 13pin sockets fully wired. As I said in me earlier post the confusion arises is because the push & twist plug/socket in 7pin trailer format has been used on't continent for longer than here. The same wiring looms will be supplied to all European countries including UK.
In't UK we are used to 7pin 12n for trailer & adding 7pin 12s to tow a caravan. Our twin socket system has never been used on the continent. Now we are going over to the 13pin plug/socket & all new UK caravans are now fitted with 13pin plug.
Most(but not all)main dealer supplied dedicated wiring is supplied with push&twist socket even if it is only trailer wiring, an extra loom is often required to activate all pins for caravan use. Some push & twist plug/sockets only have 7pins.
Sooner or later the 7pin plug/socket will be phased out & there will only be the push&twist plug/socket in 7 or 13pin format.
I've just ordered a new mondeo that will come with the 13 pin socket but will not be wired for the fridge or battery, the guy who serviced my caravan the other week said this was common with Ford and VW.
At at the point of ordering my new car i could specify a tow bar or no towbar with no option to say what the use was for.
I also agree with Fionaw1971 new car or not, company car or not the question was did anyone know if it was possible to save money rather than paying through the roof for a rip off dealer part
Ah well, worth pointing out then that those who buy their own cars Ford/Audi/VW/BMW from a showroom can indeed have 13pin socket fully wired if they require. They just need to understand that 13pin sockets come wired as 7pin if not otherwise specified.
Fortunately because of this thread they now have the required info.
We had Towequipe fit detachable bar and 13 pin electrics to our 2007 5 series touring and they did a very good job with the BMW dedicated wiring and all pins work. Contact Towequipe as they have fitters all over. Our fitter queried if I knew about the cut out in the bumper before starting so I was able to source the replacement panels.
REF: I also agree with Fionaw1971 new car or not, company car or not the question was did anyone know if it was possible to save money rather than paying through the roof for a rip off dealer part
This is the exact point that I was trying to clarify. As the BMW in question is a company car then Fiona1971 may not be able to have the work done elsewhere due to the terms and conditions of the lease. It may state the the work is to be undertaken by a BMW dealer only and if this is the case then Fiona1971 will not have the option of cutting the cost of having the extra loom installed elsewhere that's needed to charge the leisure battery and operate the 12v refridgerator and will have to pay whatever the salesman states. I hate to see people being ripped off but sometimes we have no choice when comes down to the legal facts such as this. You have to cross the legal technicalities first otherwise Fiona1971 could be in breach of the agreement any electrical work is conducted elsewhere. Many don't seem to understand where I was coming from on this issue but you have to be aware that anyone can offer advice on what steps to take next but the advice could be wrong by not knowing the full facts and the last thing Fiona1971 needs is to be in breach of the warranty or lease agreement. Please accept my apologies if my comments caused any offence but it wasn't intented that way.
Ok, the reason I didn't mention it was because it wasn't relevant - there are no terms of the lease per se as far as this car goes so we wouldn't be in breach of any terms and conditions but possibly the warranty which is what I have been trying to find out. I also get what Tentz is saying but when the majority of car manufacturers do wire their towbars with full twin electrics then it would be helpful if those in the minority would provide at least some small print to make prospective purchasers aware of this - you shouldn't have to find this out on a forum which is how we were first made aware.
The BMW towbar is more expensive because its automated i.e you push a button in the boot and it comes out from the underside of the bumper and therefore no bumper cuts are required - of course its debatable how useful this actually is as with all car gadgets but this is what we got - had we known it would end up costing us £400 more than what was already paid out Im sure we would have thought again.
I think we will probably end up just booking it back in at the BMW dealer having learnt a lesson for the future.
