I had a 2006MY CRV II (2002-2007, I didn't think there was a CRV IV yet?) 2.2 i-CTDI. About 40mpg, or 26 towing 1200kg caravan.

Nothing went wrong with it apart from an alternator failure at about 80k, and clutch slip at 68k. I didn't think it could be worn out, as I am very easy on clutches, and speculated that it could be just glazed or contaminated. On the basis that I had nothing to lose, I roasted the clutch to clean it up a bit (handbrake on, top gear, 3000rpm and engage clutch...) and it was fine until 90k when I repeated the treatment. It was still OK when I changed the car at 95k. This was a real result - a clutch change at a Honda dealer is about £1500, and I'm pretty sure at 68/90k they would blame it on 'driving style'.

Whether it was just glazed, or slightly contaminated, I can't know - but I suspect the glazing, on the basis that an oil leak would probably have got worse over 30,000 miles.

Certainly you need to be alert to any slip. As you would expect, it happened at 2000rpm in high gear, full throttle.

I do think there's a vulnerability on the clutch on these cars - there are too many reports of untimely failure. Overall though it was a great car.

The CRVII had a facelift for the 2005 model year, when the diesel was also introduced, and the noseweight limit went up from 60kg to 100kg. All the diesels have the higher noseweight limit. The CRV II diesel has a MTW of 1500kg, rather than the 2000kg of the CRVIII.

I guess my 59plate accord has the same motor in it as the later models (2.2idtec, 148bhp) mine has now covered 53k and has not had a single fault, the only reason I open the bonnet is to top up the washer fluid!! It pulls our 1300kg van with ease returning 32mpg towing and 39-40 solo (I drive enthusiastically!!)

Got 56plate Diesel and great tow car for our Sterling Cruach 6 berth, however ours does use oil, just had to chuck 1.5 litres in ( had not been checked for a while ). Also had to change the rear diff oil as I had a knocking noise, grinding from the clutch plates within (known problem with the CRV). Replaced oil with Honda recommended stuff from dealer and no more noise. Tyre wear is a bit of an issue, tracking seems to go out quick ( pulls to left slightly) but other than that nice roomy car with plenty power. About to head up to Tarland tomorrow and then Aberlour week later.

The Civic 2.2 CDTi I had a 3 years ago used about 0.5 litre oil between services with enthusiastic driving & towing a 1250kg caravan.

The forum had a few clutch failure posts, but I had no issues (sold car at about 50,000 miles).

We have the 10 plate CRV ES-T 2.2 I-Dtec, excellent tug, don't even know its there sometimes, solo its a fantastic car. We get about 44mpg solo(30 around town) and 25mpg towing a Pageant Provence 2009 (1275 MIRO). There are only 2 criticisms i have, firstly its a bit plastic inside, this is the wife's car and i am comparing it against my Audi which is unfair. The only other disappointment i have is that I feel that the engine has a low torque when going uphill on motorways. E.G. my previous tug was an Audi A6 quattro and flew up large inclines where the Honda always indicates that it wants to change down.

But I still always pinch the Honda if I an popping out instead of the Audi.

Buy the Honda, you'll never regret it!

I have a 06 2,2 CRV and have been very pleased with it,however I have heard of several fuel pump failures at about 80,000 and it is a very expensive repair. My son's failed recently and it cost £1500, his was the second that week in the same garage, Honda gave him a 60% discount on the price of the pump as it had been regularly serviced by Honda.

It doesn't appear to be noted on the Honda forums but the Honda mechanic told him it was relatively common.

I've had CRVs since 2002 (company motors) in both petrol and diesel guises, Mk2s and Mk3s

Petrol ones aren't up to much when it comes to towing, have to keep the revs up and lucky to see 24mpg (best 25, worst 18)

Diesel ones much better, taking most motorway inclines in 5th. Engine best kept above 2000rpm for max torque, fuel consumption best 32, worst 27 towing 1500kg.

Diesel solo, stuck in 40mph traffic returned 55mpg, usually about 47, around town 40 (I have a very light foot)

Reliability - 100% NEVER had a thing go wrong with any one I've had.
However, there are 3 common faults;
The diff oil needs flushing through once a grating sensation is felt on a tight turn,
The EGR valve sometimes sticks (dunno what that feels like)
The original brake discs are prone to wearing.
All 3 of the above MIGHT only need seeing to just the once, a Honda dealer worth his salt will do it for free or at a reduced price.

Clutches? I've heard comments but deffo not a common fault

Road Tax has just gone up from 165 to 200.

Buy one - you'll never regret it

I like ours. It's a 09 reg ( what ever mk that is ). Only ever had one problem, the clutch started to slip when we were 250 miles from home with the caravan. The official Honda excuse is that on some of the diesal models, the clutch is wearing uneven. They are even failing on some that don't have towbars fitted so if you are looking at one of the new shape ones, it might be worth asking if the clutch has been changed.  Also, the new ones come with a space saver spare which Honda don't recommend for towing.  Other than that, brilliant towcar !!!

The ambulance service I work for uses these as responder cars, and the clutches are not lasting at all (about 25-30000 miles), but then it could be the way they have to be driven :). Also the Honda 2.2 burns oil at a fair rate, have a friend who is a Honda tech and its a problem across the board, and something Honda have had a problem solving.

Jon

Have just done some research on this so called excessive oil consumption and it's NOT the diesel engined cdti or Dtec models but a small percentage of the earlier V-TEC engine petrol models that were afflicted

Can now add to this list drive shafts wearing out at around 70,000 miles. I appreciate some of the comments about the reliabilty of individual vehicles, and also that in the ambulance service they will get more abuse that ever a private owner would, But bear in mind that we are running a fleet of 250 of them so the mechanics are well versed on seeing the same problems cropping up, that haven't on other vehicles in the service. I have driven them many times, they are a nice car to drive, but they are tiring now compared to when they were new a couple of years ago, and I have to say I dont think things like the trim are up to normal Honda standards, with the trim feeling very plasticky and brittle. And before any jumps down my throat I do have a comparison in that in my family we have had a total of 8 hondas, (mainly Civivcs and Accords) over the last 12 years, and I don't think it is as well screwed together as these.

Jon

The CRV may be different on the trims but I must say that my 59plate accord is very well put together, this was one of the many reasons for choosing it, the trim/switches/cubby hole covers all feel solid and tight, unlike the Mazda 6 that I was comparing it to.

It is a coincidence about the oil consumption, although mine is ok I was chatting to the Honda mechanic last week when it was in for a minor re-call and he mentioned this, however out of the new cars I have had over the lat 10yrs, Passat,Laguna,Volvo then the Accord the worst for oil consumption was the passat tdi, this was also the most unreliable car!!!!

Sproz, you are right with the oil consumption on the VW/Audi Diesel's, I regularly have to put a liter of oil in every 4 or 5000 miles. This is probably why the Audi Diesel's come with a spare bottle of oil in the boot!

The day after my last post we did indeed commit to a CRV. A 2008 es with sat nav and camera. High miles for the year but we will only do around 5k per year so it will even out and it also means it was within our budget. We picked it up on the following friday, drove home in it then went on our main holiday the next morning. Only about 75 miles to the site but still quite daunting as i had only driven the car about thirty miles before hitching up a caravan laden for 16 nights away.

Result was it towed our Bailey Pegasus 546 full of the usual whilst carrying  my wife ,myself and kids with out any problems.  Around 28 mpg towing,32 around town and + 38 on a run.

Very pleased and even more pleased to see the back of my potential money pit Audi  A6 Avant.
