I had a 2006MY CRV II (2002-2007, I didn't think there was a CRV IV yet?) 2.2 i-CTDI. About 40mpg, or 26 towing 1200kg caravan.
Nothing went wrong with it apart from an alternator failure at about 80k, and clutch slip at 68k. I didn't think it could be worn out, as I am very easy on clutches, and speculated that it could be just glazed or contaminated. On the basis that I had nothing to lose, I roasted the clutch to clean it up a bit (handbrake on, top gear, 3000rpm and engage clutch...) and it was fine until 90k when I repeated the treatment. It was still OK when I changed the car at 95k. This was a real result - a clutch change at a Honda dealer is about £1500, and I'm pretty sure at 68/90k they would blame it on 'driving style'.
Whether it was just glazed, or slightly contaminated, I can't know - but I suspect the glazing, on the basis that an oil leak would probably have got worse over 30,000 miles.
Certainly you need to be alert to any slip. As you would expect, it happened at 2000rpm in high gear, full throttle.
I do think there's a vulnerability on the clutch on these cars - there are too many reports of untimely failure. Overall though it was a great car.
The CRVII had a facelift for the 2005 model year, when the diesel was also introduced, and the noseweight limit went up from 60kg to 100kg. All the diesels have the higher noseweight limit. The CRV II diesel has a MTW of 1500kg, rather than the 2000kg of the CRVIII.

I've had CRVs since 2002 (company motors) in both petrol and diesel guises, Mk2s and Mk3s
Petrol ones aren't up to much when it comes to towing, have to keep the revs up and lucky to see 24mpg (best 25, worst 18)
Diesel ones much better, taking most motorway inclines in 5th. Engine best kept above 2000rpm for max torque, fuel consumption best 32, worst 27 towing 1500kg.
Diesel solo, stuck in 40mph traffic returned 55mpg, usually about 47, around town 40 (I have a very light foot)
Reliability - 100% NEVER had a thing go wrong with any one I've had. However, there are 3 common faults; The diff oil needs flushing through once a grating sensation is felt on a tight turn, The EGR valve sometimes sticks (dunno what that feels like) The original brake discs are prone to wearing. All 3 of the above MIGHT only need seeing to just the once, a Honda dealer worth his salt will do it for free or at a reduced price.
Clutches? I've heard comments but deffo not a common fault
Road Tax has just gone up from 165 to 200.
Buy one - you'll never regret it

I like ours. It's a 09 reg ( what ever mk that is ). Only ever had one problem, the clutch started to slip when we were 250 miles from home with the caravan. The official Honda excuse is that on some of the diesal models, the clutch is wearing uneven. They are even failing on some that don't have towbars fitted so if you are looking at one of the new shape ones, it might be worth asking if the clutch has been changed. Also, the new ones come with a space saver spare which Honda don't recommend for towing. Other than that, brilliant towcar !!!
The ambulance service I work for uses these as responder cars, and the clutches are not lasting at all (about 25-30000 miles), but then it could be the way they have to be driven :). Also the Honda 2.2 burns oil at a fair rate, have a friend who is a Honda tech and its a problem across the board, and something Honda have had a problem solving.
Jon
Have just done some research on this so called excessive oil consumption and it's NOT the diesel engined cdti or Dtec models but a small percentage of the earlier V-TEC engine petrol models that were afflicted
Can now add to this list drive shafts wearing out at around 70,000 miles. I appreciate some of the comments about the reliabilty of individual vehicles, and also that in the ambulance service they will get more abuse that ever a private owner would, But bear in mind that we are running a fleet of 250 of them so the mechanics are well versed on seeing the same problems cropping up, that haven't on other vehicles in the service. I have driven them many times, they are a nice car to drive, but they are tiring now compared to when they were new a couple of years ago, and I have to say I dont think things like the trim are up to normal Honda standards, with the trim feeling very plasticky and brittle. And before any jumps down my throat I do have a comparison in that in my family we have had a total of 8 hondas, (mainly Civivcs and Accords) over the last 12 years, and I don't think it is as well screwed together as these.
Jon
