Registration document usually states the weight ask dealer for a look before you buy
Have you considered a CRV another good similar towcar

Thanks Rab, Yes will ask the dealer tomorrow as have found a X-Trail very local to us and we going for a look to see what we think of it!

Had considered the CRV but they seem to hold their value a lot more and for what we would want to spend we would have to get one a bit older with a lot more miles!

We have also been considering/comparing the Freelander 2 but with a Ford X-Max (Kerb Weight 1771kg nose weight 90kg)   For the same reasons and with the same budget.
We finally changed the caravan 3 weeks ago (MTPLM 1500KG)

We had a test drive and did a CC club outfit match with both cars and both were a good match. So we started our search but could only find a high mileage 2007 Freelander 2 within the budget. You will have more choice with a manual but it has to be auto for us.

We decided on a 2008 S-Max 2.0TDCI Titanium Auto for economy and comfort /refinement when not towing. Only Con is no spare wheel so will get one before we go to France, plenty of space to keep it in the huge boot. Only 2 of us so won’t be using the 7 seats unless we take the grandchildren.
Picking it up tomorrow, hope we have made the right decision.
Good luck with your choice.

Sorry I cannot offer any advice on the technical side of either car, I just drive them!! We currently have a 08 XTrail and have owned a 09 Freelander 2 and the Xtrail wins hands down. I think you will find the boot on the freelander far to small and it was one of the reasons we got rid of the car. The Xtrail is a lovely drive and I have to say after changing my car almost yearly since passing my text I think we have finally found the perfect family car. I know we wont be able to pick any massive twin axel van but there is still a lot of choice out there for us.

Thanks Zoe. We are off to test drive a 2008 X-Trail Trek this morning but also have our eye on a 2008 Aventura which is up in Cambs. The price difference is £1000 and the milage is the same (30k) but the Aventura does have the ESP, leather heated seats, heated mirrors, sunroof, etc. I can't decide which is best!! If the local dealer (4 miles away) offers us a better deal and makes the difference larger I may just go for the TREK model but if not may have to travel the 100miles and go for the other one!

I agree about the boot. We viewed the local TREK model yesterday and its a really good size and will suit us much better with a 10 month old baby! Have you any views on Trek V Aventura?

Hi, we tow our sterling europa both with a 51passat and a 56 freelander2 the freelander gives us about 25miles to the gallon where the passat returns 35-38, the freelander is a good car but I prefer towing with the passat

Had Nissans for years, got 2 Almeras and an X Trail 02 plate outside currently. I know it is the older model but my general experience with Nissans is that they are reliable and comfortable to drive. One Almera is on a 1996 plate the other 2001. Both have been great cars and the older one belonged to a friend originally so I know its history going back many years.

Wish I had the newer X Trail!

Hope your test drive went well, go for it I am sure you won't be disappointed.

Hi Ali,

Thanks for asking and the test drive did indeed go well. The dealer won't drop anymore on the price but has offered us £500 on account towards servicing, etc. So the current offer is £8999 plus our 56 plate Vectra SRI CDTI (full price is £12999). I have asked if we could put this towards a 3 year warranty as if they would offer this then we will go with the Trek. They can't give me a firm answer till tomorrow as they need to get some costs from the warranty companies so will be phoning me after this. Its a independant Ford dealer that is selling this as they P/X it in 2 months ago. Vehicle will be fully serviced and come with 12 months MOT plus they also offer free MOT's for life if I take it there for the services. It was also good to know that the 2.0L engine has a cam chain so no belts to change every 50'000 miles!

Fingers crossed we can go a deal as I really enjoyed the drive and it wasn't as soft on the corners as I feared. I have asked for a decent warranty with no silly exceptions and also without a low limit per claim (min £1000 per claim).

If they can come back with a good warranty offer then I will pay a deposit tomorrow...if not the hunt continues!

Darren

I can agree. My experience of Landrover was the early freelander and that was in and out of the dealers like a yo-yo! The new ones seem a lot better but there have been a few reported gear box problems with those that tow. To my mind a good guide is the ""Which" magazine motor survey which is compiled from owners feedback. The X Trail got a 91% approval rate and was one of the highest in the 4x4 section!

We find the ride very good for a 4 X 4, we took several CRVs out from different generations and they wallowed something chronic.

I am sure you will be delighted with it, do report back!

Hi Ian,

Thanks and no worries. I asked the dealer yesterday to see the V5 and was also surprised to see that Nissan don't put it on there! We are still debating what model we want and are off to look at one more tomorrow (Sports model on an 09 plate), I am still swaying towards the cheaper Trek model but the sports has a lot of extras (sunroof, ESP, heated wing mirrors, traction control, hill start / descent, etc) but is £1500 more.......then again its still under a Nissain warranty until Jan 2012

I am hoping to decide and buy this week and then will just need wait for the loan to come through before collecting. Will keep this post updated with our progress. My first job will be a visit to the local weighbridge.......caravan club have told me they show it as 1711kg!

Cheers, Darren
