You should have got a 3 month warranty with it so make sure they cover the cost of any work that needs doing and if not demand a full refund and give it back!

Having driven diesel cars for years I would have to agree that your dealer is fobbing you off. It should have sufficient torque to haul you along at town speeds in 4th gear without any problems at all.

I suspect it's last service was skimped to get the stamp in the book. Probably still has aged filters and cheap supermarket oil in it? Speak to whoever has serviced the car and ask what was done.

If you can find a competent Peugoet (or citroen) dealer to diagnose the issue that will give you the ammo you need with the vendor. As dazzer has said you should have comeback if bought from a dealer so don't let him brush a potentially expensive issue under the carpet. And get it sorted before you lose faith in the car!

As it is high mileage there is a good chance it has come via auction sold as seen and probably not had last service.Who is last owner on V5 log sheet.

OP has said that the car has main dealer history so any Peugoet main dealer should be able to call up the history on the system. This would show any past warranty issues on the car and clarify what service it last had.

OP also said the car came from a dealer (who may well have bought it at auction for stock) so he will be obliged to put it right if it is not fit for purpose.

Good point about the last owner on the V5C - they may well be happy to spill the beans re past problems (French car so might be a long call). A 58 plate car with big miles was probably a lease car and if a service was due shortly before the end of contract they will have only authorised the bear minimum of attention to get the service light off and the stamp in the book. A rummage through the paperwork my reveal the details of who operated the car.

Hope you get it sorted.

I have been driving 6-gear diesel cars (now on my second one) for nearly  7 years now.  The only thing you should notice (and you will) is that if you drop below the idle RPM the car will shake and probably stall. This 'shaking' is due to the high compression ratio of diesel engines and not a fault.  Sounds as if your car does have a problem.

Driving in town I find 4th gear best as it reduces frequency of need to change gear, and the power advantage (less effort for engine) seems to give better mpg than a higher gear.

When towing on M-ways, the mpg between 5th and 6th gears is pretty much the same, but 5th gear puts less strain on the engine.

Bertie.

A mate of my brothers works at a Peugoet dealer. I went in there with him yesterday to get a tyre and saw a notice on the reception wall warning owners not to use supermarket fuel as it waxes up and clogs the fuel filter causing the car to stall and lose power.

It stated that branded fuel (BP, Esso etc) has the appropriate additives to prevent this and that it is not a quality issue with the car blah blah. Thought it was a load of hogwash - as if that was the case it would effect all cars. But it made me consider that there must have been a few Peugoet owners with the same problem as the OP?

I have strict instructions to fill the Passat up at Tesco (Club Card Points) and touch wood have not had any problems. But all cars are different I suppose.

Maybe you should get a new fuel filter fitted and see how you get on using BP et al?

Keep us updated..

I doubt it is the fuel filter as this would cause to starve fuel supply at high revs when more fuel is needed, the problem he has is at low revs in higher gear, not in lower gear when engine is running faster needing more fuel.

On several occasions, there have been claims that supermarket fuel is inferior.  This is rubbish.  All fuel companies are required by law to ensure that their fuels meet minimum DIN standards.  I doubt there is little or no difference in buying at branded stations or the supermarkets.  I have seen branded tankers supplying the supermarkets.

For quite a number of years I have only filled up at either Sainsbury's, Tesco or (occasionally) Asda, and also at French supermarkets.   My car's performance matches (MFD display) the mpg claimed in the car's brochure.

Recently, in Truro, a local woman shopper said she would not fill up at that sainsbury's pumps because, at one time, fuel had been added to the wrong tanks. Realistically, this error can happen anywhere, at either supermarket or branded fuel ststions.  Depending on the ratio of wrong fuel, the effects on vehicles could vary from negligible to total operating failure.   Perhaps adding wrong fuel is more common than we think; in many cases being probably being addressed immediately, and no company is going to advertise the error unless problems begin to arise that can't be covered up.   This is probably the true cause of bad reports about fuel performance.

Bertie.

The additives in branded fuel, Shell etc, are added when the tanker is loaded so fuel does indeed come from same storage tank. The additives raise the cetane number which raises flash point of diesel & makes engine run smoother due to later detonation.

What Tentz says is correct.
My father was a Bulk Plant manager for Esso, and this is how he told it:
All the basic fuels have to meet a basic BS/EU standard. That is the basic fuel with NO additives.
Retailers can then add certain additives to their fuel, for various reasons, typically injector cleaners, diesel anti-foaming agents, and anti-waxing agents.
His depot filled tankers from all the retailers, be they BP to Tesco. When a driver logged into the fill required for his load he got the basic fuel plus various additives, as specified by the end retailer. So the main manufactuer retailers (Shell, BP, Texaco, Esso) got all the additives plus various dyes and chemical traces to show who the end seller was, and whether duty had been paid. Other retailers such as the supermarkets used to not specify or severely reduce the quantities of certain additives, normally the injector cleaners and the diesel anti-foaming agent.
He would never buy supermarket fuel because he knew it didn't contain the useful additives.

Most odd. Like a previous poster, I too have a Saab. 1.9 Tid 150BHP. It will pull in 6th gear from 40 EVEN WITH OUR CARAVAN ON (albeit not like a scalded cat) On the straight and level with the caravan on it will cruise 40-50-60 in 6th gear. So I reckon there must be something amiss with the car.
