What you don't mention is whether the seller of your plate was licensed by the DVLA when you bought. If so then the seller was legit and the name on your plate is that of an authorised seller. What matters is the status when you buy not what happens to the business some time down the road.

DVLA will have the records that the seller was authorised. Sellers come and go and many a number plate will have details of defunct authorised sellers. It does not make the plate unlawful

That's a very interesting link. I see the company that supplied the plate on my caravan recently changed ownership and names and the old name is no longer showing on the list, but the new name is. Does that mean that my numberplate has just become illegal?

So when the Regs say that only authorised persons licensed by the DVLA can legitimately produce number plates that can be overlooked?

When the regs say "Typeface must be sans serif. All other fonts are prohibited" and demonplates enables you to use "Akbar, Eurostyle, Impact, Stencil BT, Balloon, Gill Sans, Porkys, Superglue, City Medium, Handel Gothic and Slicker." the regs can be ignored

Earlier I posted just what the regs say about exactly what can be on a plate and which did not include a reference to slogans and badges but sums up the rules by saying " There shall be no other markings or material contained on the number plate." that can be ignored as well?

Interesting. Half the price of Halford but when you add on the fine, if caught, they will be more than double the price of Halfords. Always fascinates me how we have laws in this land which have to be observed and others that can be taken with a pinch of salt if they don't suit

The law specifically states that Euro badges are ok and it also states that the maufacturers name and post code have to be on the plate.  That is its name and post code which are not, in law, slogans. All other stuff is prohibited. Still we can say this over and over and you only find out its right if you get cautioned by Mr Plod. If you need an MOT certificate for your car is it Ok to get one from the bloke in the pub or via an authorised MOT station?

Hi Phil,

I read your posts with great interest and admire and respect your obvious knowledge in the matters on which you comment.  

In this case however I have to say that I feel that you over state the implications of using "non authorised" suppliers of registration plates. I have just bought a set on ebay. They are the legal font, have the manufacturer's name and post code on them together with  the BS number.

I have the perhaps naive view that Plod has got better things to do with his time than pull me in, and google the list of approved suppliers in Dartford to see if this chap is (or was) on the list.

It also begs the question as to when we buy a car, we should all carry out checks to see that the number plates already on the vehicle were supplied by an approved agent?

I fully agree that illegal fonts and spacings that could make the plate difficult to read are a bad thing and feel that they fall in the same category as breaking the speed limit, using a phone whilst driving and of course drink (in any quantity) driving.

I just somehow feel that not using a recognised supplier for your number plate does not quite fall in the same category as the above.

Take your point completely Mr U-M. Doubt if Plod ever looks at plates unless they stick out like a sore thumb like the one near me with a leeds United badge on it. Stunningly obvious its illegal.

My point however, is not to "over state the implications of using "non authorised...." . No, the point here is that there is a law that specifies what is required so why is it so difficult to comply?  

The plates are required to be in a particular style so that they can be picked up on speed cameras. That camera will also show the maker on the plate and any unlawful badges etc. So, if you are caught speeding you may find some other fines heading your way as well. Why put yourself at risk of extra fines? Anyway, you all know what is right and what is wrong. Up to you all what you do with the information
