Iain the brochure weight is the base car, mines a titainuim X which is full of bells and whistles and a tow bar !!!. On a weight bridge my car weighs 1630 kg empty with 90% fuel add the 75KG driver that makes 1705kg. This calculation is the correct way of working it out as per european law.

Based on those figures if i towed your van my combo it comes out at 90%. i agree fuel runs out....., but i also dont go on holiday on my own either my car is always loaded with the wife 2 kids 1 dog & camping gear like cadac awning ect ect.

since the max tow weight is 1800 kg you should always be within the legal limits

While my van is 'only' 1480kg it tows fantastically with our 2010 Mondeo.

As Bessie says, Mondeos are heavier than the brochure weight!!  Also in my opinion one important safety factor is the 90kg (from 2008 cars onward) nose weight limit.  Santa Fe autos only have an 80kg limit for some reason to go with their 2000kg tow weight.

In answer to Grampian's point, my 2010 Mondeo 2.0 TDCi has a 3970kg Gross Train Weight so it can tow 1800kg when the car is at its 2170kg Gross Vehicle Weight.

My car is a more stable towcar than the 1800kg Peugeot 4007 4x4 I had before & I was able to tow back from Dorset at the beginning of last month in the strong winds that were on the Friday after the Jubilee weekend with no issues at all.

Compared to the Peugeot, I get around 8-10 mpg more solo driving & 4-5 mpg more towing. Servicing is cheaper too.

One thing I would recommend is MAD assister springs if you get a car without the factory sports suspension. The car was perfectly stable before, but the rear was a bit low.

Hi Bessie,

Ok. I now agree, I am much the same when I go away, car is always full. I just thought it better to make the car heavier. Might have a rethink about mondeo, bit not.going to rule out the cvr or Santa fa. Thanks for info

Iain

Hi sgolly

I looked at the galaxy the seat is the exact same car just badges up different, they deranged them on top gear and very few knew the difference.

But I made a short list of my preferred car to make looking for one easier, to easy to come back with something that's not quiet what you wanted or up to the job. Especially with eager car sales people following you about, telling you all the negative bit about a car because they do.t have in in stock, but they have a nice o.e over here that would be ideal. Lol.

Honda Crv  points that i know about, squeaking clutch pedal / master cylinder, some early new shape ones pulled to the left slightly at very low speed (mine did this but was fixed under warranty)

Look it up on Honest John for more info.

Have you considered slightly larger (or maybe just heavier) "executive" cars like Merc E class, BMW 5 series, JaguarXF ?   The former 2 are available used as an estate (the Jag Sportbrake will be available soon).

For what it's worth, we have a Coachman Laser 655/6 with a MTPLM of 1860 kg, but also have 5 children, so tow with a VW Caravelle.   Stability is no issue at all, but it is quite a heavy combination - close to 5 tonnes fully loaded.

Hi,

The Honda was the first suv type car I had thought about. Do you know if there are any known faults. I like my mondeo very much and though it has never left me stranded, I have had to fork out for a new clutch, and power stearing pump, front drop links, cv joints, wheel bearing, strut and spring, and rear suspension bushes. On the plus side my mate is a mechanic so only cost me the price of the parts. Plus the usual brakes and discs, exhaust, and tyres ever 20k.

Hi,

There is a known issue with the synchromesh failing on some CR-V 2007/8 diesels, I had mine replaced under warranty (with a bit of huff and puff) but apart from that they seem to have very few issues.

Mine has now done 33k and tows our 1500kg van really well. I had an S-Max previously and although the CRV is a bit more "agricultural" than the S-max I would certainly buy another....an perhaps will.
