Sorry but either you have been mislead or have got hold of the wrong end of the stick.
1) A normal caravan policy will cover the caravan whether or not it is attached to a vehicle and whether or not it is being towed. ( If it doesn't then you have got close on 300,000 caravanners very worried )
2) Whilst attached to the tow-car, damage to the caravan is covered by the caravan policy and damage to the car is covered by the motor policy.
3) Liability to Third Parties cover as required by the Road Traffic Act is provided by your motor policy.
4) When the caravan is attached to the car the car and the caravan become 1 unit in the eyes of the law and any liability to third parties is provided by the motor policy.
As implied earlier, it the duty of every driver to ensure that they have valid RTA cover before driving and you MUST check you are covered by inspecting the Certificate of Motor insurance. Your employers should provide you with a copy.
Incidentally, generally speaking you cannot insure something that does not belong to you. You cannot therefore insure your empolyers car.
