If incorrect/inaccurate information is posted, It should be corrected, this is the purpose of a forum, collective knowledge. Some posters seem to forget that threads they post on here are not their personal property. Information posted can be valuable to anybody that reads it, not just themselves.

The answers for 99% of questions asked on ukcs can be found with a quick google so one could argue that there is no need for this forum at all, but like it or not the op will have learned something from this thread.

If he chooses to ignore this information that is his choice. However, if others have learned something then all good.

Its a pity this thread has descended into argument because an important point has been raised & it is that stabilizers are not there to prevent a badly loaded caravan swaying. Their purpose is as a last resort & could prevent an accident if, for example evasive action has to be taken at motorway speeds. For this to happen the caravan needs to be a stable tow without a stabilizer.

It's a pity that this thread has ended up a bit of an argument. But as said, let's all learn a bit from the whole discussion. Over the years I have seen many posts saying stabilisers are not necessary, it is all down to loading etc. My own experience recently (on our last trip out, my thread started elsewhere) confirms this as the lever on our AKS1300 had working itself halfway off by the time we had got to our site (approx 90 miles) The same thing happened on the way home. I duly stripped, serviced, and replaced the pads, on the unit. A quick trip of around 40 miles yesterday confirmed that all is well, the lever was nice and tight to operate and stayed down even with a 'spirited' drive.
The point is - during that last trip down to the coast and back we had absolutely no problems with stability and I do not hang around. However, I pay particular attention every time out to the car and caravan tyre pressures, the caravan loading, and the noseweight. I do realise that the stabiliser may not be completely necessary but I like to use mine.

Good forum this is, but please keep it polite!! I agree that there are some very experienced towers on here and I take heart from the fact that I can learn even after all these years from those who have been at it longer than me.

The OP probably blames me but if they dont like what i said then ignore it.

Others may agree with me. Personally they do or they dont.

We all have different opinions. But it does seem like the OP has an unsuitable vehicle for his caravan.

100kg over its max towing limit. Even a dealer said you wont tow a 6 berth caravan. Dealers will normally sell you anything as long as its legal.

You dont have to agree with what i have said above, So think i dont agree and move on.

Depends if you read a generic book or look the actual plates on the car, plus having the car & caravan weighed on weigh bridges.

It depends what caravan's they have in stock?????

Are we missing the point here. The caravan is 100kg overweight and yet the lesson to be learned is that you should check the stabiliser is engaged...?

I would have thought the lesson to be learned is to check the suitability of your outfit BEFORE BUYING.

This thread is slowly moving from the mistaken to the downright foolish.
