Are you a member of the caravan club? If so, check out their tow car matching service on there, it seems to work better for me than the what towcare website. What about the VW Toureg or the Hyundai Santa Fe (the Santa Fe would give you a 92% match, which is better than the Mondeo or Kuga)?
I got a 96% match with the kuga....and no we are not members ...C at CC here im afraid...like I said earlier the restriction is as we get car from work we are restricted as to what we can have...Fords only and the all are not always available......

Ah, on a quick look (and it might well vary on the spec of the car) it's fair to say that both the Kuga and the Mondeo upsets the CC calculators greatly and both say very firmly that they shouldn't be used to tow that caravan.
The kerbweight calculation for the kuga is 113% and 114% or 117% for the Mondeo.
The Kuga's towing Limit is at 101% but the noseweight is OK, the Mondeo's towing limit is at 91% but the nose weight is 111%.
so completley different readings....so how can that be..? kuga 2.0 litre
tdci diesel auto 2013..to be honest ive not found a good reading with mondeo..I know its a 2 litre but not sure about the rest...ill ask other half when he gets back from work..and thank you

according to autotrader the empty weight of your van is 1532 kgs and laden is 1900kg info taken from (caravan for sale at canturbury caravans) and according to the ford website the heaviest new kuga has a kerbweight of 1707 kgs.
For me you have no choice than to get the discovery, the kuga used to be based on the focus floorpan, not to sure of the new one. but its far to small for your swift.
I agree with Bessie, granted a Mondeo automatic would be legal, I would get the Discovery without a doubt.
On 70 miles a day the fuel difference for a Discovery will not be as big as you think, my Mondeo doesn't do anything near its book economy (I get 42 mpg, ford say I should get 50 or so), & when towing I am pretty sure you will actually get better economy out of the Discovery. Bigger cars usually get closer to their quoted economy figures than smaller cars.
Quote: Originally posted by vonc on 13/5/2013this is totally confusing me ...the miro for our van is 1532....when I put info UK what towcar...it says 97%...for the kuga...the mondeo is 107% so am I not correct that the kuga is a better match ?..it says slightly over... on other sites they say it is only a guide and 100% is still ok.....
The MIRO is the empty weight which has no bearing on matching a towcar to a caravan .
You use the MPTLM figure which should be less than your cars kerbweight or at the very least the same which equates to 100% match .
Your Twin axle requires a heavier car than the Kuga for a safe towing match .
If you use Whattowcar put in your caravans MPTLM (max Loaded Figure )into your calculations and you will find that the Kuga come out at more than 100% .
Its all very well to tow a trailer / caravan that weighs more than your car but if you can't stop in an emergency because your caravan is heavier than your car your in deep s**t

hi ..laden is1815...dont know if that makes a difference...heavy items will be in the car....im definatley worrying now....
Remember that your car also has a maximum weight which it can be safely loaded to so if your car has all your heavy stuff and 4 occupants you may be above the cars Maximum authorized mass .
Sorry but as others have said your big twin requires a big car /4x4
looking into a 4x4.just hope it happens....at the min we will have to contend with the smax 2.2.litre tdci auto ...we have holidays booked..and will have to drive carefully....its towed fine so far...we will have to manage for at least 3 months....

Sorry don't think you should even consider towing where the weights are at max or above its not safe for you or other road users. Glad to see you have purchased the Disco though.
