Good luck Cledry with your caravanning. Although it is a learning curve, stick with it - the rewards are immense. We have been caravanning on and off since the mid eighties (that is, the 1980s!! lol) and we love it.
As has been said, give that towball a really good clean, and pay particular attention to loading/distribution, noseweight, and tyre pressures. Even those on the car can make a huge difference.
Regarding the EGR, if hubby does decide to 'have a go', it is a straightforward job, but one thing not mentioned in the write-ups is not to detach the bolts from the tin gasket underneath or the gasket will make a break for freedom down the back of the engine. Bottom tray off most times to retrieve it. (don't ask...)

in the first post you say that the car was lurchy on the way was this b4 you picked the van up?if so it cannot be the van
what do you mean by lurchy the egr fault normally shows at low revs but seems ok when turbo kicks in around the 2000 rpm mark(varies depending what it`s set to)have you had any warning lights come on ?no light on dash probably means no error code for a garage to work from can be costly for them to find the problem so go to a garage you trust .
cleaning the egr is quite a easy job and lots of help on fiat/alfa forums to help you out
i had a egr problem and it was when towing the van i first noticed it always pulled the van effortlessly then one trip right from the off it really struggled along and hills felt like we wouldn't make it to the top and they were not that steep we had done the journey several times before without problem
good luck
The car has been losing power for a bit - not lurching. It was only a bit lurchy when we were towing the van last night. It's still not back from the MOT so I've asked them to clean the EGR tomorrow before it comes back. New tyres, clean towball, better distributed weight and a clean EGR and we'll see what happens

It's been under par for a while. I was worried it was the turbo on its way out but if it can be sorted for fifty quid at the garage I'll give it a go. I've been doing about 60-70 miles a day in it for a year so it's taken a bit of a beating really.
I did try to explain that to my husband. He seems to have taken it as a personal slur against his driving skills but I just don't want to break the car by just ignoring it.

I don't want to seem like a harbinger of doom but it could be your car. The 1.9 diesel engine is a GM unit i.e Vauxhall, and they are renowned for the EGR valve clogging up and sticking . We had a Zafira with that engine and the symptoms you describe sound very much like the ones we had with that car.
that engine is actually made by fiat powertrian its based on the old 1.9jtd engine and has been adapted in collaboration with gm for the vectras and zafiras.it is a very good engine if serviced properly and biggest culprit for any problems is the egr valve, get that solrted and a PROPER service with a good flush and the engine will be fine again even if a little agricultural.
------------- uhhm!!! lets take it to bits..see how it should work..lol
My Saab has the same engine (1.9Tid) I just had to have the egr valave replaced. The car lost power and the engine light came on. After restating it was better but still not giving full power.
Our local independent saab place ran the diagnostics for me. It showed EGR valve fault and DPF (diesel particle filter needed to regenerate). The valves can be stripped and cleaned, the spring was weak in mine so they replaced the valve. The DPF was fine as they can make it regenerate (cleans it!) on the computer(a DPF is expensive!)
Cost ne £200 though.
Its a common fault on those engines and unlike earlier diesels you cannot remove the EGR valve.
------------- DS-There's more to life than football!!!
I had the EGR cleaned yesterday and the back tyres changed. The car's performing much better now. We're towing the caravan to a site this afternoon and we'll be really careful about loading it. We might have to do a very rudimentary noseweight check with some bathroom scales but we'll have a go.
Now, I'm so poor we won't be able to go on a proper holiday in it :D
eta - I think we had the DPF removed on our car because it kept sending a message to the turbo to shut down. It was something with three letters anyway.
Stick with it Cledry - you are getting there. Also please use top quality oil for changes and top quality fuel (branded - my preference is Shell but most branded will be good as they have additives which keep the injectors clean. There may be some on here who will tell you that supermarket fuel is OK but not in my humble opinion, shared by many others on various forums I am a member of.
Glad you got the EGR sorted. Remember too that a good blast on the open road frequently, if your trips tend to be short, with the RPM at or above 2k for 15 mins or more, will keep the dreaded DPF clear.
Enjoy your caravanning and keep us all up to date!
