The last time I had a new car I asked the car dealer to get an additional two plates made up for my caravan and trailer. All waiting for me when I collected the car and no charge :)

Always bought off Ebay for £5-£6 ish. Sister in law is a traffic cop and said no probs with the plates whatsoever. Its purely (as said above) size, font, spacing ect. If this meets the requirements then its 100% legal. Wouldn't give Halfrauds £20 odd of my money! Ya gotta be mad!!

Exactly the plates are 100% legal as long as you dont ordered ones with logo's and dodgy spacing etc.

The seller is the one being naughty by not asking you for the registration details.

That's the best advice, if you have not picked up your new car yet, get the dealer to supply an extra plate. Make sure it's not lipped at the bottom as it might not fit in the recess on the 'van.

Also, if it's a new car you may not get the V5C back from DVLA in time to go away.

I've always made my own plates up as I have a vinyl cutter. About a quids worth of vinyl and I just re wrap an existing plate.

It's probably not 100% within the regulations but as long as the font is correct and the spacing ok you'd have to find a particularly jobs worth officer to find fault with it.

The regulations are in place to prevent fraud and or font/spacing mis use.

lots of mixed views here then! 17 not getting a new new car just new to us so cant get dealer to get it. Hubby is getting plate from either halfords or local car shop, just feels wrong getting one from someone who does no checks. Doesnt feel right and going to go with gut feeling. Thanks all for your views though.

It may be possible to get plates from the dealer as 3 out of the 4 last cars I have bought have had new plates fitted so may be worth asking if they fit new ones could you keep the old ones, for the sake of a phone call could save you upwards of £10 not a massive amount of money but also am saves messing around getting new ones made up

All cars have been 2nd hand

I suspect some of the eBay ones are putting the details of a legitimate company on the plate without the documentation. The manufacturer of the plate is commiting an offence, but the plate appears to be genuine. It would be impossible to get a conviction on the driver because a forged plate is indistinguishable from a genuine one. If an unlicensed producer were raided they would be prosecuted, but as it would be impossible to prove a plate was forged once fitted, a driver is unlikely to be prosecuted.

There was a fake number plate manufacturer on Fake Britain the other day. Trading standards were more interested in the illegal use of trade marked motor company logos than the illegals use of a n

My ebay seller offered the choice of a) legal - with docs via the post, or b) "show/off road use only" - no docs.

The price and plates themselves are the same, and both options showed makers name and postcodes (which tied in with his paperwork), BS mark, and legal font and spacing.

His rating was 100% on just under 30,000 transactions. Ordinarily I'd call in at Halfords but they wanted £30+ for a pair of GB euro plates, as opposed to the £12 and free postage I paid. YMMV.

My advice is worth no more than the price paid for it

don't think you will be able to get your plate from the likes of halfrads,as you won't have the v5.this will be sent away by the dealer.

Some years ago my car failed it's mot due to a damaged front number plate, 1 day I noticed the new plate didn't match the plate on the back, I took my car back to the testing station and played a little game with them asking them to spot the problem, the mechanics tried for ages to spot the problem, it wasn't until a few minutes after I said the problem was that 2 things should match and didn't that they spotted it

When we bought our caravan I went to a local motor factors who always give me a good price even though I don't have a trade account with them, they charged me £8 for a new plate but I had to take in my log book and a household bill before they would make up the plate even though they know me well, halfrauds are a rip off even to the trade customers, I know this as I have a trade card, it's only useful for the odd emergency, I'm not sure I would risk buying a number plate off ebay not when motor factors are usually good for costs.

You can use the new owner tear off slip that the dealer should give you. They send off the balance of the V5 after that bit has been removed.

We have recently bought a new car and the salesman knowing we were going to tow had two sets of No.plates ready without even being asked. Little plug here for Hendy Ford - great service!

There is nothing wrong with the plates from ebay or internet. You will find they are made in Ireland to the required British standard. In Ireland they don't require V5 to make plates. Mine are even mark with a BS number.
