I'd stick with the 4x4 option as you say, it will be better weight wise, Whilst the superb is a good car the 2ltr cr is 100 kgs lighter than the car you are currently driving.

Sorry bessie, but all the diesel Superbs will tow there van, and they won't even know its there, there van being around the max of 1300

Towing braked max kg (at 12% incline) 1,500 - 1,800 1,800 2,000 1,800 1,800 2,000

Now the VW audi groupe would not publish these weights if the car was not capable of towing them, and nobody in there right mind tows at the manufacturers max limit, mind you there is always a few brain dead idiots who would try it.

Skoda have said that if you take the max tow, then reduce it by 15% or less of the max tow figure, you will be at the 85% rule or below it depending on your van and have no problems.

We had a 5 bearth lunar clubman, and towed it with a nissan primera

1 lump or 2

I'm sorry if you saw my post as 'banging on about a skoda superb!'

What i actually said was we looked at and test drove loads of different cars at the weekend...including an outlander and Xtrail.

For us the Skoda blew all the others out the water. It does have an 1800kg towing weight...which is more than our vectra estate, and more than our 6 berth Sterling Europa actually weighs.

I also said in my post that the only way to know what car is right [be it another estate or 4x4] is to go out and physically try them for size and handling.

As the OP also mentioned about either a 4x4 or maybe another estate...i thought my post was relevant

B*gger tea Bob....I'll stick with my cider!

We have today, just collected our new to us (but a 2006!) Nissan Xtrail and part ex'd our Volvo V70.

So far I've only driven it 100 miles but it is lovely - nice to be high up and feels very safe. We have a collie dog who fits nicely in the back bit and keep finding clever little bits to the car.

Obviously haven't towed with it yet, but so far very impressed. (well except I can't work out how to disable the alarm and the dog got a huge fright when he was having a snooze whilst we were in a takeaway!!)

Hi Calinyx i didnt see your post as banging on in the slightest, we all know who bangs on about skoda's no matter what the op ask for & more often than not the advice is poor.

If you read his post above Bob says that Skoda state you take 15% off the 1800kgs max towweight it will give you a 85% towing weight

So 15% off 1800KG = 1530KG

Car weighs 1457kg and running at 85% means you can tow at 1530kg's

Would you tow a caravan at that weight ?? what weight is your van ??

Bessie

From many posts on here Bessie500, I am afraid it does not sink in with SkodaBob that the magic safe figures is based on the KERBWEIGHT of the vehicle not the max towing weight (unless this is less than the kerbweight)

Following SkodaBobs advice would result in towing outfits that are, at best, ill advised heading towards dangerous (caravan weighing more than the towing car) and, in some cases, positively illegal (those passing driving test after 1997)

Some of the best cars for towing are:

Landrover Freelander

Nissan X-Trail

Hyundi Santa Fe

Kia Sorrento However -  I've been told they can suffer from flywheel problems after they have done 80,000 miles and may need a new one. The other 3 have solid steel flywheels.

Can you explain to me then why there are thousands of 4x4's such as Discovery's etc that have a kerb weight of about 2100KG yet they regularly tow trailers upto three and a half tonnes??
Just sayin..........

So, what your saying in effect then that all the trailers you see behind Disco's, Rangerover's etc which could be upto 3500KG (legally) are infact "unsafe"?

Never heard so much rubbish in my life!
