Look at the bottom left hand corner of the photo; if it has something like that silver thing on your engine, you have a DPF, may be further down the exhaust pipe. On the common rail engine it is on the end of the turbo to get more heat to burn off a lot better. Mine is the 140 (138Bhp)CR engine.

Pass they may have been bought out by the Chinese firm Geeky by now as they seem to be buying nearly every maker they can get, they now own LTI the black cab maker, Volvo and many others.
Just an update, I decided to keep the golf, took it to a specialist turbo place that said if the turbo blades wasn't damaged he could clean the VNT, but because I had left it so long maybe my fault or maybe not, the turbo blades where chipped so a brand new turbo £700 fitted, so happier that a new turbo for pulling. Just the DMF so look at next, hmm still not sure it is that as when the car is warm theres no noise. Also turbo man says he can re-map it especially for towing (once the turbo has settled in)
