Sat last bank holiday Monday watching everybody pack away and drive off, except a 1 year old Range Rover. That needed a tow truck.

Land Rovers/ Range Rovers- all about the name in my experience. Old saying that the Aussies on our owners club use; if you want to go into the bush, take a Land Rover. If you want to come back again, take a Land Cruiser.

You just cannot beat simple, tough, outback engineering where it really matters (which isnt the town school run or City Centre shopping visit or footballers wives wannabe posers...)

Seen a ton of Freelanders & P38 Range Rovers require RAC/ AA etc on caravan sites. Never for a Kia/ Toyota/ Nissan.

Had a 2009 sorento manual diesel from new. Only a few minor niggles in 35000 miles of use (towing and solo). A blown fuse here, a blown bulb there. Did about 30 -35mpg solo and a bit less towing, 22 - 25 mpg. I tend to drive sedately in the sorento because it is more comfortable then driving it like my hair is on fire - it aint no sportscar!! Now got a 2013 sorento diesel auto. Fuel usage is better with 40mpg attainable solo and 25mpg possible towing (1350kg caravan, 2 adults and 2 teenage monsters plus a boot full of luggage). Much more car like to drive and more powerful & better more modern interior. Got the kx2 satnav. Great ice plus a really useful satnav that redirects you if traffic is bad. Plenty of other gadgets as standard (look it up on kias web page). For me I would not bother with the land rover or range rover ranges because of reliability concerns and expensive initial purchase prices. Kia as already stated give a 7 year warranty and going by my last sorento you will never need to use it! 2 other things to consider - my new sorento cost just under 30k so no longer are they cheap as chips. Also if you are a 'badge snob' the image is poor (a bit like Proton, Hyundai, Skoda, SsangYong etc). Ignore image and look at reliability and purchase price and the kia makes a good case for itself. I can honestly say I loved my old one and I love my new one even more.

I have driven Landcruisers, Shoguns Discovery upto 280,000 miles in less than 2 years believe me the LR out performs all other vehicles. The LC is a good vehicle but does not have the long life performance and the interior looks shabby. Shogun is poor after 170,000 miles but really good up to that point. LR have invested heavily in electronic technology and yes it was poor 5 years ago but has improved tremendously and is no worse than any other vehicle. Over the life span of the vehicles nothing will still be on the road when a land rover is still plugging on. Look how many old LR's are still on the road!

I have read on the Sorento forum and also in a caravan magazine test that the 2010 to 2012 models have stability problems when towing above 50 mph unless fitted with self levelling suspension. I think SLS was standard on KX3 only.It has just stopped me from buying a KX2.

The new Sorento 2013 has SLS as standard and they have apparently tweaked the suspension. They have also reduced emisssions ,increased mpg and put auto nose weight up to 100 same as manual.

Having said all that 664DavesS(post above) sounds happy with his KX2 .

I have towed with a Renault 21, Sierra 2.0GLS, Renault 25, Nissan Primera !.8 petrol, Nissan Primera 2.2dci, Izuzu Trooper, LR Disco 4.0 V8, Toyota Landcruiser, Shogun, Mondeo 2.0dci and now a Mercedes 270.

Our current van weights in at 1430kg (so not small) and without a shadow of doubt the most stable of all those tow cars is my current ML.  It's solid as a rock at speed and is not phased at all by motorway turbulance.

Also without a shadow of doubt, the worst of that lot above was the Disco.

I'd go for the Kia. My brother in law has one & it just quietly gets on with the job. It's never going to set the world alight in terms of handling, performance or economy but I think it's such an unstressed machine it just lasts. I know of two that are now nearly 10yrs old & have never gone wrong. I tried one once, towing our caravan & while it's not my cup of tea it was rock solid as a tow car.

I've got a Freelander 1  - old style TD4 - which has done 85000 miles for me absolutely trouble free and  I'd LOVE a Freelander 2 one day.

Our KX2 has done two trips to France this year, no problems at all, it is very stable at up to 70mph (sneaked up on the autoroute).

We normally sit at 60mph where permitted. 21-24 towing last trip with aircon on(twas hot!)
We have seen 27mpg towing and upto 40 solo. Auto is 6 speed as well but I can't comment on mpg, as ours is manual.

Its a year old now, just had first service before last France trip.
Its been back once,in our ownership, to have headlights adjusted as they were a little high and to tighten handbrake cable.
It was a demonstrator(used by the MD) so was replaced when the facelift model came out, so we got a very good deal-3 months old

Our previous 09 old model Sorento had one fault in 3 years(seat adjusting switch faulty).
Kia are very good on warranty.

I like LRs but the Kia value for money and warranty is a no brainer.
They are quick too with 194 bhp and 311 lb/ft of torque.
Need to watch your speed especially solo!

To Skoda Bob-try a Sorento or Sportage they are good.

The new Cee'D Gt is getting very good reviews too!
Our next one will probably be a KX3 as we fancy an auto and all the toys.
KX2 is well specced though.

Really, I've owned two Freelanders 2's since 2008 to 2012 and not one was ever called back in under a recall.

We have a freelander 2 2011 model, never had any problems at all, it's been the best tow car we've had, the one before that we had was a freelander 1 td4 that was also an excellent tow car, I think like everything you can pick up a good one or a bad one whatever make, same as caravans.

I replaced an09 Sorento for a 12 plate (new shape). Certainly not as stable as old one, but never given cause for concern.  Feels a bit "twitchy" at times. MPG = solo mid 30's knocking about, high 30's - mid 40's long runs. Towing anything between 22-26 depends on terrain . Motorway 26, start usuing gear box when off m/way and consumption goes up. Towed all over France and UK, lovly car. Afriend of mine has a new Freelander, and main dealer service is £1000 for a main service OUCH!!! Since 2013 they have tweeked the suspension and chassis, and towing stability is supposed to have improved. Mine has SLS, if you buy the new shape Sorento, go for that.  All the new ones are eqipped with SLS.The hand book suggests pumping tyres up when towing, I ahve tried with increasing pressure, and leaving them alone, seems to make no difference. By the way I am towing about 1600 kgs.

95% of landrovers ever made are still on the road. The other 5% made it home.
