There are two versions of the Ford Focus 1.6 diesel, one is a 90 bhp and the other a 109 bhp. I used to tow with a Ford Focus 1.6 diesel estate 109 bhp version and solo on the motorway I could get 70 mpg. provided I didn't exceed 55 mph. in 5th gear. However, when towing I was getting around 34 mpg. but then I increased the car tyre pressures as advised in the handbook and then got 38 mpg. The down side was climbing inclines as I had to change down the gears more often but it's the best car so far for fuel economy when towing. I now have a Volvo V50 2.4 diesel which I get around 28 mpg. but that's with a roof box on but haven't as yet checked what I will get with the roofbox removed. I would expect to get around the 30 mpg. mark but this car with 180 bhp. is a work horse in comparison so hill climbing now is effortless in comparison so I wouldn't expect any more. The 2.0 Focus diesel estate with 136 bhp that I once had would deliver around 33 mpg. when towing but both the 1.6 and 2.0 diesel engines are exactly the same Ford engines as to what they installed in the V50. The 2.4 diesel is a 5 cylinder Volvo engine (D5) the same as what they install in the Volvo 4x4 vehicles.
My defender gets 30ish towing, 30ish round town, and 30ish motorway run... (actual value 28-32)

Octavia Estate 2007 2.0TDI manual towing 1150kg. Gives 30mpg (indicated) towing at 55-60mph. I feel like I should be getting more. We have two bikes on the roof - maybe that's what makes the difference?
3 series bmw 2L petrol towing <900kg van getting 25-28 mpg towing on a run and 25-28 mpg around town, don't take it on a run very often with out the 'van
Our Mondeo 163 power shift got 27mpg from cornwall to Warrington with the cruise control set to 60 all the way back. Iv'e had up to 32mpg going up to the lakes with less luggage on board.

Simon - I have seen some VERY optimistic figures on here! Yours is about on a par with our Saab. 150 bhp, Sentronic 'box (has the 'slush' torque converter so some loss there) we get between 25 & 30 to the gallon towing depending on the wind direction, cruise set to 65 as soon as we are on open roads. Solo can get as high as 51-52 but that is driving like Miss Daisy, ie at about 65mph. Solo with cruise set at 80 gives us about 45-47.
I am happy with the towing figure, although the previous Saab, a manual, used to give us about 33-34. However, I just love the relaxed driving with the auto quite apart from the benefit for me (bad arthritis left ankle)

Over a total of 1,371 miles, 710 with 'van on the back and 661 solo, overall average of 38.2 (best 44.8 and worst 32.9). A lot of the towing mileage was the A9 in Scotland from Perth to Inverness and back - so not exactly cruising on the flat!
