A definite yes is the answer, of course you need to do the math first yourself, as not all VW Golfs are listed on the matching websites, and that includes the sites that the dealers use.

I drive a VW Golf 1.6 TDi BlueMotion 5 Door Hatch 2012 plate Mk6 and that is good to 1300kg all up towing weight, based on the car's kerb weight it is a firms car and one of my colleagues tows a Avondale Dart 5 berth with no problems at all, exact same model Golf.

When I get around to buying a caravan I will be going for a Adria SportLine PX (aka Altea Tay 432PX) a nice fixed bed, which will be around a 90% match when loaded.

Thank you for all the replies, it really helps.
I have decided to also look at the Skoda Superb. I saw two this week - taxis - and they look great, very comfy and spacious. I had previously ignored them as I thought they were saloons and we have two dogs, but what a clever boot opening idea they have.
So the best idea will be to test drive a Golf and a Superb to see which suits best. Although the Superb is bigger I do love big cars anyway, so not worried on that score.
And a regular blast along the M1 and A46 is not a problem either, my son's a mechanic so I understand the dpf thing!!

If you go for the Superb have a look at the estate version, its the dogs so to speak, and actually it may look big but its not much wider or longer than the Octavia, and you can get 2 great Danes in the back with room to spare.
Cannot fault the superb we have 2 of them.

Good point that - perhaps why our Saab 9-3 estate tows so well, it also has Sport suspension. Steady as a rock, even when being passed by 90mph White Van Man!!
I like the look and specs of the Superb, would love an estate version as my next car but 'er indoors says we can't afford another car yet.....boohoo....

Now looking at the Octavia 1.6 TDI CR Elegance estate, a 2010 model.
Looks nice, mpg and road tax look acceptable, much more affordable than the 2 litre.
Can easily fit the dogs in the back and kids too, as the only family car it's got to be versatile.
Opinions on the 1.6 engine for towing a van??
