You are much better to buy a crew bus ready converted to take rear passengers than to buy a van and try to convert it yourself, the latter option can count as a major alteration when it comes to insurance and MOT, as you have effectively modified the safety zones in which passengers can travel and the van was safty tested for by the manufacturer by installing extra seats/belts into what was originally designed to be a cargo area.

These changes also have to be notified to the DVLA, the same way as when a van is converted into a campervan/motorhome. You will save yourself a lot of bother and money if you can find a van ready converted for your needs.

After going to a VW car weekend show I don't think you will have much problem with a VW transporter even the older T4 models were pulling twin axle caravans even with big wheels and lower suspension, I wouldn't go for the vito as they rust like mad and the Vauxhall Vivaro and Renault and Nissan vans are all the same but stay well away from the 2.0 cdti as they have serious injector problems the 1.9 is great even when I used to carry a ton of water in the back for window cleaning.

I second a van which already has seats and windows even if you get the 9 seater mini bus even if you take a row of seats out if they are unneeded.

Ive towed with vans for years, Peugot expert: from lands end to to scotland: Slow on hills but great stability: Now with Vito 115. 150 bhp. Fab tow vehicle. Drawback is ive been turned away from so many sites: Ive always used vans as ive raced motorcycles for years, & often have a week hols following or before race meets, Little do the site owners know when turning me away the contents of my van is far more expensive than any outfit they have on their site:
I think it's just snobbery: But give me a van anytime. Loadsa space & far better towers all round:

Wow, that is a revival of an old thread, you may get more response starting a new one. Anyway, welcome to the forum.

You could have problems if you are towing with a camper, as some sites would probably want you to book two pitches. If you want to tow with a van you could have problems with some sites that don't allow vans onsite as they regard them as "commercial vehicles". These problems certainly wouldn't occur with all sites, but you could find it is the case with some. If your Transit were simply a people-carrier you would probably have no problems at all.

I'm sure that others with more experience than me of towing a caravan with a van will come along. This is usually a very helpful website.
