No doubt you've had a look at the reviews on http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/reviews/ too then.....

Not Parkers reviews.

Is there much difference in their opinions?

I've always found their reviews pretty comprehensive - decent photos, comparisons with peer models, TCO figures, driver reviews, etc.

What models are you looking at...?

Haven't owned either but I know people with both and, personally, much prefer the Santa Fe up against the pre-09 Sorrento (not sure of your budget).

Had a lift in the 55 plate Sorrento and wondered what the hell the grinding noise was when the engine was switched off, only to be told it was the electric aerial going back down! I did have a look to see if it had a manual choke too.... . Think the interior leaves a lot to be desired too, quite dull.

Found the 56 plate Santa Fe much more refined throughout and a smoother-sounding diesel unit too (not sure if the Sorrentos of this age still had the Merc engines but someone will come along with the answer).

We got rid of our 55 plate CR-V earlier this year and that easily handled our Bailey, although it is a lightweight model at less than 1300kg. Might be worth having a look at the Honda too....

I'm not keen on Hondas'. had an Accord in the past, yes I know it's not a tow car, but just found them to have expensive parts and the insurance was on the high side I found.

I was looking with interest at the Sorrento's, until I read of the (possible) problems you could have. Then someone (here) was talking of the SF's.....

So now I'm swaying towards a SF, IF I can find one. They seem to be like hens teeth round here.

As for budget, I'm guessing around £5-7.5K... Opinions on what I could get for that?

Last 2 cars we've had have been Kias with 7 Years full warranty that is transferable to the new owner for remaining years when sold. Peace of mind and also a great resell point.

Don't blame you for going for the Hyundai. I think you get a much better class of car for your money against the Kia despite joint development and them rolling out of the same factories.

A quick glance on Autotrader shows a few SF CDX's around the £7.5k mark but it all depends on how far you're willing to travel. As always, it's down to personal preference when it comes to spec and mileage. With the age you're looking at it's doubtful you're going to find any diesel models with space shuttle mileage so don't let cars with 100k+ put you off as long as you get a comprehensive service history.

Personally I'm happy ignoring higher mileage in lieu of a higher spec motor.

I have just purchased a warranty from warranty direct.Ididnt take the first price I was qouted and bargained £200 off the initial £650 qoute. The warranty seems to cover everything I want and you get a 14 day cooling off period to cancel once you scrutinise the warranty smallprint.I have had a warranty before, on a previous car. That warranty paid out fine when the head gasket went, a bill of nearly £600 at the time. The reason I need this warranty , bearing in mind the other posters reference to a hyundai. Is that I bought a hyundai i800 three months ago, fantastic towing car, just right for my large family. But, hyundai wont give me the remaining two years of warranty because I havnt got the invoices for the last service from the garage I bought it from, a ssangyong dealer not hyundai. So even though it has service history you still need invoices for the services, if not serviced by hyundai dealer. So lovely cars but do your homework if buying a hyundai and phone hyundai warranty to confirm that it has a warranty.

Sorentos and Santa Fe's....?

My sorento gearbox locked up solid at 14000 and was 4 weeks out of warranty. Kia would not honour it, even though there was a Kia bulletin describing this very fault going around!. I had warranty wise from the end of Kia's warranty and they said it was an inherrent fault in the manufacture and down to Kia. I cancelled Warranty wise and got a refund and went to a lawyer re Kia. The threat of court action worked wonders with Kia and they said that out of "goodwill" ha ha they would meet the repair bill of £1350. I wouldn't bother with a warranty again.

I work in a garage and we deal with loads of warranty companies including the AA, Customer protect and loads of others. Some are ones were people take out a warranty on a car they already own some are ones that come with a car they've just bought. Some are very comprehensive and others have a low maximum claim limit. we regularly do warranty work including fully paid for turbo's etc. In fact we've just done one on a 30k Vauxhall Antara and I've just processed a fully paid claim for a Power steering pump on a Lexus today. And a front wheel bearing on an Insignia yesterday which came to over £600 as we finished up having to replace the alloy hub carrier too as it was damaged, only available from Vauxhall and £396 inc Vat.
Like everything else people never go on forums and report the good stories, only the minority of bad experience.
