I would be very happy with those MPG Amara, indeed we are planning to buy one with the manual gearbox, and with our caravan being over 100kg lighter than yours fully laden, we are expecting some rather lively performances. For us, hill climbing capacities whist towing are quite important, not only because of the terrain in which we live, but because we spend a fair amount of time around Snowdonia, and one part of our journey up to a favourite CL involves quite a steep hill start if we meet any oncoming traffic at a T-Junction.

Im still toying with colour choice at the moment, we have ruled out Black as being rather drab with its Black interior, I loved the red, until l spotted one out on the road that looked more like tomato soup Orange in full sun, so with the caravan being basically White with the Silver, dark Grey and Red decals, we may end up with either a Silver or White CRV.

Julia

The pearlescent white suits the CR V, if you get an EX model it will have 18"wheels as standard (other models 17") I would avoid one with the optional 19" wheels (they originally cost a fortune as an optional extra) as they make the ride a bit too hard. Removable towbar (made by Bosal) fitted by Honda dealer with specific wiring loom is around £700, probably less expensive from an independent fitter but if you buy a CR V that has manufactureres warranty would not risk an indep[endent as in the event of any problems with eletrics/electronics etc this will not be sorted by a daler FOC.

Just a note:  the skinny spare wheel is not suitable for use when towing, 17" are readily available on E bay 18" not so common.

If you want a full size spare and cannot find one locally or on E Bay try contacting M&M auto salvage

Thanks for that information Amara, we are actually looking to buy the SE model, mainly because one of my pet hates is leather upholstry, which many top of the range models come with as standard. Im a little unsure about having a detachable towbar as my OH is advancing in years at 73, and finds it difficult to bend down low to fiddle with such things, and the easier operation of our Winterhoff hitch has been a godsend to his arthritis, compared with the old AlKo and Bulldog stabilizer combination.
I am also registered disabled myself, so the extra height of the CRV in comparison with our Civic, will make access and egress much easier for me. Im also planning to have a boot lift fitted to help lift my mobility scooter in and out of the car. My OH has been lifting it manually out of the boot of the Civic by taking to pieces, but its all getting to much for him and we really do need to be able to manouver it in one piece with the help of the hoist.

The dealer has informed us that the price of all Honda cars is due to rise in February, so to avoid the increase, we will probably be limited to a colour choice that is due in stock before that date, but im now more leaning towards either a Silver or a White one.

Just to update people, I took the van out for a test drive up and down the A5 today and the crv performed remarkably well, better than I thought, granted the van wasn't loaded but the car had four adults in it.
Van is now bought and will pick it up in the new year.

Nice one, where you getting the van from? We tow ours up and down the A5 and over the tops from Bala to Porthmadog with no problems. Great comfy cars with loads of room. More than pleased with the CRV towing our Lunar.

Its a dealer called Raymond James based in Atherstone Warwickshire.
We've been very pleased with the deal they have given us and that they allowed us to have a go at towing the van with the crv.
Now looking for sites close to home for a couple of weekends away in January and February to try the van out weather permitting

Have to agree , as I said earlier we borrowed a petrol V-tec CRV when my diesel was in for a service and it was OK on the flat but absolutely "gutless" on the hills .
The OP will know all about when he hits a long motorway
hill with the van in tow

We towed a 14ft Elddis Wisp and now a Lunar Lexon that is 23ft and have had no problems. May not be the quickest in acceleration but it is legal, comfortable and our holidays start when towing so we take our time and prefer to get there in once piece. Enjoy your new van.

The petrol version is very reliable, a work colleague has a W reg one with over 100K on it, it has been very reliable. The engines in those cars need to rev (VTEC I believe) rev them hard and there is more than enough performance!

What do owners of the petrol model CRV think to their hill starting capacity? Having spoken to someone with a petrol CRV at West Ayton in September, and indeed with our Vtech 1.8 Civic, steepish hillstarts can be a problem, and we have to carefully plan our journey to avoid these as much as possible, hence we are planning for our new CRV to be a 2.2 diesel.

Good Choice with the 2.2 diesel and you won't have a problem with hill starts .
If you have to plan your route so as to avoid possible steep hill starts you haven't got the right car for the job .
The CRV V-tec's are great solo but give them an unexpected steepish hill start with the caravan behind and its very easy to end up cooking the clutch .
And a replacement clutch is around £1400 from Honda

May or may not help. I had a 2ltr CRV the first version 'V' reg some years ago which I replaced by a diesel Accord Estate in 2004. The CRV was prone to wheel spin in the wet & as Honda generally make high revving petrol engines it wasn't a very good tow car, it also had a very high ratio reverse gear making caravan reversing difficult with clutch slip having to be used. The car was stable enough on the open road, helped by the short rear overhang. I would have replaced it with a diesel CRV but that wasn't available at the time. The Accord diesel was well up to the mark as regards towing ability and better fuel consumption, 10mpg higher compared to the petrol. If you are towing nearly 1.5 tonnes have a good think about dragging it away from lights, up hills & keeping pace with the traffic flow. I now run a Discovery 4 which is probably the ultimate tow car but returns 27mpg with 2.5 tonnes behind it & cruises at whatever speed you set. Expensive to run/own though.

Morning everyone, I ve looked at all replies with great interest, and would like make a couple of points with regards to the towing capabilities of the petrol crv.As stated in one of my earlier posts the car seemed to tow better than I thought it would along a short stretch of the A5, granted there were no wet hill starts or reversing on wet grass, but from pulling off at junctions and keeping pace with other traffic it seemed to do a fair job.
The van will not be loaded up to the max, probably 1300kg, and the car won't be either.
I appreciate what people have said with fuel consumption , but to change the car for a diesel of similar age and spec would set me back probably 3-4 grand and at the moment that is not an option.
We will see how things go in the new year with a few local trips in the pipeline ,then the longer further away summer outings and if it couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding then we will have to look at changing the car,but not to give the crv a chance would be madness.
Thanks again everyone for your comments,
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all.
