There are not generally laws saying you CAN do something but where you CANNOT do something there are laws so the onus is on the person saying it is law to provide a link to that law - so that is on you Grampian91

MUST is used in the HC to denote a law

Well if it was within the law then yes I would regard it as safe. Well as safe as operating within the law can be.

You could equally argue is driving a car at 70mph within the speed limits safe? Someone in a white coat who I hope is considerably smarter than me has done the calculations and deemed it safe.

Well I am afraid I would disagree with the man in the white coat, its not just about what a car can physically tow.
I could hook up the same caravan to a mini and it would tow it but try to go up a steep hill, or even worse try to go down it.

I am 11 stone in weight and I use a rucksack often but I wouldn't like to try to carry my own weight for long let alone a weight heavier than me. I would'nt get very far and if someone pushed me I would fall heavily and do serious damage as I would'nt be able to stop myself.

In my opinion its an accident waiting to happen and as I said in my last post I have seen the resulting damage.

Which i didn't. Read it as you MUST not tow a caravan in excess of the cars kerbweight UNLESS YOUR A MUPPET and want to burn in hell.

Not knowing too much about towing limits apart from the 85% rule which I thought was not safe to exceed.

The other thing that should be considered is validity of insurance.
If you are over weight and have the misfortune to have an accident, will the insurance company payout.

As VangoMan02 said, an accident waiting to happen and maybe an innocent party involved as well.

The simple answer to the insurance question is yes they will pay out. As a comparison if a driver has an accident and it can be shown he was speeding would the insurers pay out?

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

So you are saying if allowed you would tow a caravan which was considerably heavier that the towcar as in the Op's example.

There is a big difference between being legal and safe where caravan towing is concerned.

I will stick to being safe even if they do change the legal limits which I hope for your sake they don't.

They'd never change the legal limits at least not upwards. It's far more likely they'll change them downwards.

The limits are put in place so that the inexperienced are prevented from getting themselves into a situation they can not correct.

Yes I am saying if it was made legal I would tow a heavier van. I've towed many trailers in excess of the vehicle weight (legally) before. However I'm not suggesting for one moment the OP should.

Probably best we agree to disagree on this one. Arguing on the internet is a bit like competing in the special olympics and all that.

I have always used mondeos and love them because they are affordable to me and I like there reliability .

I had a Mondeo estate 2.0 tdci Ghia . A great car .
We now have a Mondeo 2.2 tdci and I find it even better brilliant tow car,
However I think your weight would be too heavy for the car. I would not consider buying more than 1500 in weight for my car. I think mine can tow up to 1800 .
All very technical but good advice on here.
