You can get the DPF deleted, on any diesel car, just google it, and they still pass the MOT with flying colours

cars with a DPF REMOVED WILL NOT PASS MOT.and will invalidate your insurance. i have just spoken to a mate who is a vosa inspector.

diesel steve is correct skoda bob it is against the mot ruling to drive without a dpf and most certainly would fail.

As cscotson has identified minor problems if the engine doesn't do a regen, wouldn't this be worse if you manually switch it off?

As long as the DPF box is in place when its time for the MOT it will pass the smoke test
Basically the way it works is the car is plugged into the comp and eliminated from the management program of the car without removing the box.
The other way is to remove the box, open it up and remove the inners and weld it back up and put back on.
From Feb 14 if the box is not there when its due it MOT it will fail, some have removed the box and replaced it with a straight pip that's the wrong way to do it.

Press release

New rules for MOT to test for diesel particulate filter

From:Department for Transport and Robert Goodwill MP First published: 4 December 2013Part of:Reducing greenhouse gases and other emissions from transport, Climate change and Transport ...

Diesel particulate filter check now required as part of MOT test.

MOT test

Tests for diesel cars and lorries are to be tightened up to ensure vehicles have a critical exhaust filter if one had originally been fitted as standard, Roads Minister Robert Goodwill has announced.

Garages and testing stations will be required check for a diesel particulate filter (DPF) in the inspection of the exhaust system as part of the MOT test (or annual test for heavy vehicles) from February 2014.

The vehicle will automatically fail the MOT test if the filter had been fitted as standard but is found to be no longer present.

The filter works by trapping solid particulate matter from exhaust gases. This type of filter has been in use for more than 20 years and helps meet European emission standards, improving air quality and health standards.

Some firms offer services to remove the filter, claiming it will improve the economy. But it is an offence to drive a vehicle that has been modified this way, as it will no longer meet the emissions standards the car achieved when it was approved for sale in the UK.

Roads Minister Robert Goodwill said:

“I am very concerned that vehicles are being modified in a way that is clearly detrimental to people’s health and undoes the hard work car manufacturers have taken to improve emissions standards. It has become apparent the government had to intervene to clarify the position on particulate filter removal given the unacceptable negative impact on air quality.

“This change to the MOT tests makes it clear – if you have this filter removed from your car it will fail the test.”

The filters need to be ‘regenerated’ regularly through burning the soot to gas at a very high temperature, leaving behind a residue. If not carried out properly, regeneration can lead to a build up of soot, which can affect performance. This has led to some diesel vehicle owners opting to remove the filter, which makes their car illegal for road use.

More information can be found via the ‘Diesel particulate filters guidance note which will be updated to reflect the changes to the MOT test.

I have a 57 plate Antara 2.0s, it has 56k on the clock, I have had it a couple of months, tows our Swift challenger very well, I have had no problems so far, sometimes struggles to start when really damp, but think it may need a new starter motor, maybe due to its age. overall very happy with it.

kpnuts81, that's what I said in a way, but as there is no actual test that can be carried out on the box, as long as its there it will pass, even if the inners have been removed

I suppose if an MoT tester decides to actually bother to check if dpf fitted then is easy enough to find out. I'm sure local taxi drivers etc have their own 'tame' testers that don't bother to check & get a 'drink', so a 'bent' MoT in the finest traditions of the motor trade.

I would have thought if you rev a non dpf diesel hard enough you will see smoke whereas with dpf it will never smoke. Also end of exhaust pipe is always clean with dpf but without it will be sooty so I guess to try & fool tester you would at least have to clean end of pipe before taking it for test.

With all diesels, you take them for a thrashing before the test, to clean the pipes out, if you don't the smoke test reading could be high and even if there is nothing wrong with the car it could fail, so when your taking any diesel vehicle for the MOT get it hot, and don't be afraid to give it a load of welly a few times in a low gear

Yes, and I know several, so I'm not sure why the abuse. Perhaps you've crossed a few?

If the DPF has obviously been removed or if the casing is obviously damaged, such as with a weld along it, then it will fail the MOT.

I'm no expert on this, but surely if the DPF is "disabled" within the ECU, then the soot would no longer be burned off. This would then result in a build up over time and an eventual DPF failure. Replacing the DPF would them result in an extremely high garage bill.

If the DPF is cut open, filter removed and re-welded shut, would the MOT garage not see he weld and become suspicious? Also, does the MOT not measure the amount of particulate matter in the exhaust fumes?

Also, if you are caught "tampering" with the DPF functionality, you are liable for a file of up to £1000 for a car.

Surely, with the potential risks of prosecution or vehicular repair, it's only sensible to comply with the law, become familiar with the car's requirements and drive accordingly.

Hi all, well i have also the Antara 2.2 4x4 Exclusiv on a 62 plate , new from dealer with 28 K on the clock after 2.5 yrs, and never had an ounce of trouble with it. I would consider it to be one of the best cars i have ever driven. Ok fuel consumption is a bit crappy 30 - 35 mpg Solo and 25 towing. but what do you expect form a 2.2 4x4 diesel. Previous car was a Volvo V70 and that only did 36 mpg solo. With rgds to the DPF, i have never had the warning light on, and it goes about it business recharging the dpf about every 400 - 600 mls. Work is 15 mls with a 8 ml journey on the motorway rarely above 30 mph (M62 M60 around manchester) and then urban journeys at weekend. Tows the van extremely well at 1300 Kgs MTPLM.
Would seriously consider another one next yr when need to change, but fuel consumption might sway me otherwise to a more sedate tug for the van.
Oh and got a spare wheel for it off the internet and a part worn decent tyre from a local dealer.
Tow bar and spare wheel will be for sale next October.

rgds
