The heavier the van to the tow vehicle and the lighter the noseweight the more work your ATC will be doing.

Your then into a situation where the caravans brakes maybe working a lot harder than they normally would and your pulling a caravan thats braking to keep its from swaying.

Extra brake wear on the van and gearbox or clutch wear on the tow vehicle.

Again 7% is a guideline. The closer i get mine to 75kg the better it tows. Even though the van is only 72% of the cars empty kerbweight.
7% would take me slightly over at 102% (80.5kg).

I keep it as close to 75kg as i can get without going over.

I am talking about over the 100% limit. over this limit the insurance will be having words,I had an accident towing with a frontie,Not even my fault. the van was a eldiss avanti 556, when i tried to insure the van again, they told me to tow with a bigger car, or a smaller van, the car was well within its limits. I went to insure with another insurance company, No problems at all to insure it.

Does the towing limit set by the manufacturer decrease with the loading of the car?

On our own car, we are only allowed 2 adults and fuel if we are at the maximum towing weight.

If your car is under its max gross weight, the caravan is under its max permitted mass, the train weight is less than the cars max train weight then you are legal. It would be inadvisable to exceed the manufacturers max towing weight but as long as you abide by all these your insurance company do not have a leg too stand on even if you unwisely tow a caravan that is heavier than the cars miro.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

Listerdiesel the answer varies from car to car. The grosstrainweight (a) determines how much the total weight of the car fully loaded (b)with all personnel, and the caravan fully loaded (c)can be. So b+c cannot exceed (a). It's about the total load on the car whereas the towing weight is only about what the car can pull behind it.

I understand that, but on our Discovery (as I published here a week or so ago) I can tow 3500kgs max towed weight, BUT I can only have two adults and fuel to go with that weight.

If the car is fully loaded, I can only tow 2000kg. Might be peculiar to Land Rover.

Because we don't have a significant towball loading with out trailer, we stretch the rules a little on loading, but usually myself and SWMBO plus a bit of luggage.

If we had self-levelling suspension we can carry 4 adults polus fuel etc and stay at 3500kgs.

We do have a set of air bags to fit when I get a minute, but the car doesn't look overloaded as there is very little loading from the trailer drawbar.

What are the GVW and GTW weights on the plate for your disco ?

Peter, is this because the Disco was a 7 seater and they did not want anyone carrying all seven people and towing at the same time??

On my Rangie the kerb weight is around 2150-2200kg with a GVW on the plate of 2880kg and a GTW of 6380kg (2880+3500).

The 4 x4s seem to be rated to tow more than their weight. Defenders can tow 3500Kg and you do see them towing large trailors.

Our last Sorento (old model) had a tow limit of 3 or 3.5 tonnes, current one I think is 2 or 2.5 which is more max weight.

It is perfectly happy towing our Unicorn (probably around 65-70% ratio). 

Having owned a large number of these "evil planet destroying energy guzzlers" We would not consider anything else to tow with!

There seems to be a few drivers that think the towing capacity refers to the total payload for both vehicle and trailer ..... do not know where they get that from ...

Mine was a 5-seater as built, 3rd row seats were added by previous owner.

2750kg and 6250kg, it's higher with self-levelling air suspension.

it can be depends on what type of hitch you use . i use a sensible hitch .ha ha .
a fifth wheel.
