I know most car speedos read higher but my Mini is different and reads slower than you are actually travelling.
I only discovered this one day when I was driving down the motorway (not towing!) and I had the sat nav in with me - the speedo was showing 60mph but sat nav was registering 78mph!!
Naturally when I realised this, I slowed down to the correct speed limit!

I think I will just be guided by the sat nav to give me an accurate speed and will tow at a speed I feel confident and comfortable with.
And of course it goes without saying that the van will be loaded correctly and tyre pressures and nose weight will be checked.
If I am going too slow for other road users, they can overtake.

Are sure the satnav wasn't indicating km/h rather than mph?

There is a legal tolerance for speedometers to read slightly fast, but they should never show a lower than actual speed.

Edit - Just read the Classic Mini bit in your first post, so I'd suspect the cable might be loose, or its ends (or the gearbox or speedo bits it connects with) worn.

Due to the upgrading work ongoing on the A1....the speed limit is set at 50 mph with a 6ft 6 inch width restriction on outside lane and at least 2 sets of average speed cameras....this starts not long after scotch corner and ends at leeming where the motorway starts and its on for 3 years However..this does mean that you will spend a large part of your journey stuck behind the truckers who are stuck in the inside lane and probably travelling at 30 mph due to being stuck behind some idiot car driver who thinks speed cameras jump out in front of you!!! So-you will be driving nice and steady through the worst part and then onto a lovely wide motorway. The trucks will be trying to keep at 56 mph and their speedos are very accurate. My advice is run a few mph slower so they can pass easily-or a bit faster than them so you can keep out of harms way.I drive a truck on this route daily and have never blown a caravan over yet

My biggest worry is the drag from passing lorries as I have heard this can cause a caravan to sway a bit.

HEJ - have you towed your outfit on dual carriageways? If so and it's been ok, then it will be no different on a motorway, the speeds are the same as for motorways.

Never towed on a dual carriage way either!
I am sure I will be fine - I remember feeling like this before I towed solo and I now do that all the time.
I think it is just a case of get on and do it!

No, they were doing the stretch from just beyond Boroughbridge to Leeming Bar, that is finished. Now doing from Leeming Bar to Scotch Corner.

Then try it on a dual carriageway first, then you will get a feel as to how your unit will behave. Nice thing about DC's is that usually there are plenty of opportunities to exit if you don't like it.

I'm sure you will be fine. I bet you have towed in windy conditions - what was the towing like then?

My diddy caravan seems to be very stable, no matter what the weather throws at me, and I don't notice the lorries until they have gone past me on a motorway! Sometimes there's the odd tiny wobble, but nothing to worry about.

The first time I towed anything it was the caravan I have now. I was terrified of it to start with, but once I realised how stable it was, I was off. I've always had a problem with motorways, especially going South (long story) but I managed to tow my caravan along a stretch from one junction to the next on my very first try. It's so much easier on the motorways, you don't hold anyone up, and it's quicker from A to B.

Just have a go, and see.

I used to have a demountable romahome, which was so unstable and so slow I couldn't use motorways or duel carriageways! I went all the way to the outer hebrides in it using A roads. Took me four days though!

Helen...just thought...If your at all worried about the journey----follow the A1 south through the slow bit from scotch corner to leeming and then turn off as though you are going to Leeming bar services--you can then follow the A6055 south all the way to the junction with the A61. This is the old a1 route and runs alongside the motorway.

My caravan, so far, has been fine when I have towed her in windy conditions. The odd big gust has caused a little wobble, but nothing that made me feel out of control.

Hadn't thought about trying a short trip on a dual carriage way first. Might tow up to Scotch Corner roundabout and go down the A1 North, turning off at Barton, or if I am doing OK, off at Darlington and then back home.

Thanks for the advice about using the A6055. Nice to know there is an alternative option if I don't take to motorway driving!

Just go for it driving on a motorway or duel carriageways is easier than an A or B road, they are almost straight

About your speedo - it's illegal to have a speedometer that shows a slower speed than you are travelling at, but legal for one so indicate up to 10% faster than the actual speed.

I'd recommend the advice which says stay with HGVs since they will be doing a true 54mph and you won't keep having to change lanes.

A tactic that we found useful when being passed by 'heavies', coaches or 'white vans' at speed was to maintain a central position in your lane. Keep an eye on your rear view via the drivers door mirror and watch for any approaching 'potential' issue. When the approaching vehicle is at a suitable distance from your outfit, drift out towards the right-hand edge of your lane (try not to encroach into the middle lane if you can help it - although I also found that by weaving a little within my lane approaching motorists tended to give me a wider berth when passing!) As the approaching vehicle is closing to the rear of your outfit, gently glide across to the left-hand side of your lane, thus maximising the distance between the passing vehicle and yourself. s the vehicle passes, just gently glide back into a central position within the lane and continue as normal.
Perfectly legal and the extra 2 - 3ft this tactic affords you between the passing outfits makes a world of difference!
Also, for our old outfit, it was more susceptible to buffeting when driving at 56-60mph. We would also slow down to 50mph just before the approaching vehicle reached us and by lifting of the accelerator and then gently easing on the gas to maintain that speed keeping the unit in 'pull' mode rather than 'drift' mode. Hope that makes sense? At 50mph we encountered little if any buffeting from passing vehicles. You will find through trial and error at which speed your outfit responds best at.

Are you a centre lane hog?

If so, don't do it when towing a caravan - you'll make yourself even more unpopular
