My van is really old and (allegedly) light at 650kg fully laden, but there is no way I can push it manually onto the drive, and no way to reverse it in, the road is too narrow. It cost me £900...
I at first had a Mr Shifta, which wasn't too bad, although it was still a sruggle. On a shingle drive, I put lengths of carpet under it to help it on its way - and a wider jockey wheel. And pushed the van, rather than pulled it.
However, one day I had to come down the road from the opposite end and had to pull rather than push the thing, and couldn't shift it more than a few feet at a time. I was practically in tears by the time it was on the drive, as I have back problems and can't shift anything remotely heavy. And no-one around to give me a hand either, and no relatives in to phone for help.
Well that was it. I looked around to see what was on offer, and bit the bullet and had a small motor mover fitted. The mover cost £700, so nearly what the van had cost. Did I care - no. I was past caring! However, it has paid for itself over and over, just in sheer easiness of getting the van back on the drive. Before that, I was dreading getting home and starting on that palaver yet again.
I sold the Mr Shifta to someone who had a level drive and no shingle to negotiate. And he was a big strong chap!
