Good evening all,

We are looking to go from a trailer tent to a caravan and we have become thoroughly confused with all the terminology used while trying to work out if we can tow the van we like legally.

I wonder if you knowledgable people would mind looking at my vehicle weights etc and advise if i would be legal to tow the caravan or not on a post 97 driving license?

Car: ford mondeo estate 2.2 tdci titanium x sport;
Figures from V5C
mass in service = 1615kg
max permissible mass excluding m/c = 2320kg

Caravan: swift challenger 530 se 4 berth 2002;
Miro = 1167kg
Max allowable weight = 1404 kg

which of the 2 weights are added together that i need to be under 3500kg so i can legally tow.

Kind regards

David

With a post 1997 licence you can not tow this without taking another test.
If you add together the mgw of the car and the max allowable for the caravan you get a figure whic is more than 3500 kg so you would be committing a licencing offence if you drove it.

In all other respects that car and that caravan are a wondeful match and will do the job superbly.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

what is the law based on?

What you actually weigh
or
what the plates say you could weigh

we already have a detachable tow bar fitted to the Mondeo.

Licencing lawis based upon the plated weights, ie what you actually COULD weigh.

Everything else is based on actual weights.

Thanks for the info!
I just wanted to double check with some knowledgeable people, you have confirmed what we had feared!

Now on the hunt for a light caravan under max weight 1120kg!! or start the process of persuading my dear missus that a folding camper is a good option (no storage cost of £400 per year) and no £900 for lessons and test for heavier van.

Regards

David

Hi look at some of the adria range we have a Adria Altea 542 Uk with MTPLM of 1300 Kgg. We have come across the same problem you think great 2.2 ltr engine will put anything, not so. Like alreadt mentioned take the kerbweight and find 85% of this which happens to be c.a. 1372 Kgs, this is what as a guideline is safe to tow, you can go higher and people do if more experienced

Otherwise get the van you want but don't put as much in it. We had a 2.0 ltr Ford Focus II estate (2006) and pulled the van with this. the KB was 1429 Kgs, which meant we could only tow at c.a. 1214 Kgs and not the 1300 Kgs.

hope this helps. And do your test as mentioned above.

It is not what is safe to tow that is the problem that Mondeo is very very safe to tow up to about 1550 kg. however, with a licence dated after 01/01/1997 it is illegal to tow any more than 1120kg without taking the test. In the op position I would take the test and buy the caravan I wanted. Or look arlind caregully there ate lots and lots of caravans that would be legal, but not a lot of newer vans at that weight.

On a B licence you could load the Mondeo to an actual weight of 2320 kg and get a caravan with a MTPLM of 1180 and load that to an actual weight of 1180

If the Mondeo (GVW 2320) is say 1620 empty then the payload for that is 700 kg

If the caravan (MTPLM 1180) is say 980 empty then the payload for that is 200 kg

I have not taken any transfer weight from caravan to car via the hitch into that calculation

Quote: Originally posted by Paul B on 21/8/2014Woooo not so fast...now I've not worried too much about the regulations on this as I have a pre-97 license, but my understanding is that the law is in relation to maximum gross weights, regardless of whether the tow car or trailer are at their weight limit.

In this case (my understanding is) that you should be adding the 2320kg car and 1404kg van together = total 3724kg and therefore overweight if you don't have B+E category on your license (which you won't have if your post '97 without taking additional test).

Sure someone with more knowledge on this will come along soon, but didn't want you rushing out tomorrow to spend money on a van if you couldn't legally tow it!

You are correct MTPLM of the van 1404kg + cars MAM 2320kg
= 3724kg   the OP is not legal with a Post 97 licence
