In the last 10 years my family have owned 4 diesel skodas, and I have had tow Mondeos. All 4 of the Octavias have had to have DMF and clutch replaced ( one of them twice )and only one of them towed a caravan ( and that much lighter than mine ). My Mondeos not a clutch problem from either, in fact not a breakdown or any replacement other than service parts in either.
I only know 1 person that has a skoda and thats an octavia, he was well impressed with it at 1st economy being the major thing, then his gearbox went............... he's not that keen now, im not to sure if it cost him about 5k to fix.

IWonder what the sales ratio is of Fords sold compared to Skodas
Nuff said
If you count all the VW group vehicles about 10 to 1, don't forget the same components are used across the range and that includes the DMF
So to clarify you are saying ratio of ford cars to VW group cars is 10 fords to every 1 Skoda?

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

What a load of old cobblers that statement is.
They are known locally as WalMart motors, build them high sell them cheap
There are lots of things said about skodas around here, one of them goes How do you double the value of a Skoda? Answer fill it with Fuel.

Amazed this thread's still going....
Basically, cars these days are built to fail break in some way to make you buy another....
Every car has it's faults, some more than others...
Spot on, but they are all a lot more reliable and less likely to break down than cars of 20 or more years ago.

Back then, you yourself could fix the car at the side of the road with only a few tools.
These days, it's nearly always taking it to a garage and charged a second mortgage for nearly ANYTHING!!!!
An example that I always remember is that with a certain VAG group car, it has to plugged into a computer to 'tell it' they're changing the brake pads!!!!

Bit gutted, i think the clutch or DMF or both might need replacing on our Cmax 2.0 TDCi Ghia. Its started to make some strange rattling sounds when clutch half way at idle. Wondered if anyone could recommend places for repair at reasonable prices. Thanks.

overall what do you think of the cmax,
i looked at a galaxy 2.0 diesel on a 57 reg and it seemed ok.
whats the cmax like as a towing vehicle?
re the clutch, mine started to make a noise on tickover, then it started to slip badly when towing the van home.
its a passat 57 reg and i changed it myself parts cost £300 ish from eurocarparts.I put a sachs clutch and dmf in.
On mine the dmf had twisted around so i had to use a grinder to get at the bolts that hold the flywheel to the crank.
Most garages wanted 700 + to change it
funnily enough not one of them would give me a written quote so i did it myself.
Towed the van to sandringham from derbyshire twice since and had no problems.
looking at 08 reg honda crv and x trail
diesels, does anyone own or tow with one.
I have read that the max towing limit on the crv is 1500, my van max weight is 1440
Jeepster - This was/is our first tow car so our requirements were something suitable for everyday even if we didn't want to continue with caravanning. I don't have anything to compare it too but as i've got used to the feeling of towing, i think its been pretty good to honest. Plenty of power 134bhp, torque good (don't know that though), wobble free cruising at 55-60mph. Van 1400kg MTPLM supposedly works out at 93% approx if i remember rightly. I'm pretty strict/frugal with payloads though, I have to be, OH can easily get out of hand..lol
