Im so glad that there are people out there who not only put money back into the economy thus creating jobs, but also taking the hit financially on these gorgeous cars.
Then they are available to the majority to buy because of the second hand value.
Most of these cars are leased by companies in any case, not purchased and so they are ideal second hand cars, max dealer service history and half the price if not less.
Whats not to like....carry on practical caravan.
Its all very well for people to say this isnt the real world, but by bringing these cars to our attention, it could be.

When practical caravan was introduced it was just that, it even showed you how to make your own caravan and accessories.
i think the word practical needs to be dropped or changed to something like Caravans Today.
There could be a market out there for a mag that give you ideas and plans to make or repair caravans motorhomes and tents.
then again why bother buying a mag when everything you could ever want is on the internet for free

In 2008 we stayed on a site in the Ardeche and I was chatting to the father of a family that our children had got friendly with. They had a brand new caravan and new Range Rover. It transpires that the family wanted to experience camping, so they had gone out bought both just to see how they got on. In today's money over £100k just to 'do camping'!

Another time we were near Annecy and a top of the range Merc pulled onto the next pitch to us. Older couple got two chairs and a table out of the boot, opened a bottle of wine and sat enjoying the nice weather. A bit later they set up a smallish tent and that is how they stayed for about 4 nights before moving on. Very basic camping, but expensive car.

I am inclined to agree there Kojack. How many people who can afford £95k for a car would be likely to do anything "practical" to a caravan. Maybe they should change the name of the mag.

I strongly suspect that anyone likely to want to do anything practical to a caravan will probably have a tow-car costing under £15k. Generally, those who can afford more than this would be more likely to have the work done for them, I would imagine.

In my experience Steve, most people who have that amount of money to spend on a car, simply don't concern themselves with trivialities like depreciation. Money is no object when it comes to buying what they want. It's a very different world they live in.

As Scarletsfan says "I don't doubt that there are many people who can afford and will spend £95k on a car, but somehow doubt that those same people will be into caravanning." They will stay in top hotels wherever they go.

Colin my mate bought a new range rover sport just before Christmas, cost him 85k with all the toys on, depreciation was one of the main factors over all the other 4x4's on offer,
The residual value of the new RR are far better than the older ones (at the moment) he actually had to wait 6 months for it to be built.
Last year I called into airstream caravans at Tebay on my way back from Newcastle just for a dream, Anyway parked outside the entrance was a new twin axle airstream waiting to be collected, 65 grands worth it was stunning, the guy collecting it was a Sgt Major in a brand new range rover with his 3 kids and wife in tow, all going to Scotland for their holidays

If I won the lottery I would not stop caravanning but would buy a Range Rover and probably swap our Unicorn Vigo for a Cartegna!
Probably buy a 911 or Jag XF too!

Mine is coming up to 17 year old, past its last MOT no problems yet again. I am a member on the Landyzone owners website and find mine is one of the younger Rangerovers/ Landrovers on there with many a few years older.

I bought mine 3 years ago for £1700 and will just run it into the ground then replace it with another one, you get a lot of car for the money (and comfort) but it is all in the height and width of them rather than length - mine is no longer than some of the saloon cars in our works car park.

The older Landrovers & Range Rovers Are not expensive to keep running as diy repairs are feasable for home mechanic with just tools. What I was on about was Range Rovers & other very expensive cars from about 51reg. You can pick up a 52reg Range Rover of just discontinued shape for £5-£6k, not many about though & they were popular enough at the time. Same with Mercs & Beemers top of range I mean, £50-£60k up when new. Not really practical to run as not really a diy fix & repairs will cost £1000s.

So cheap to buy but impractical to own. So perhaps they do get scrapped? Plenty of cheaper cars are at end of life & scrapped after 10-12yr & it appears now that very expensive cars last no longer than cheaper ones.

Billy, I wonder if the early L322's (2002 on) are being stripped for parts instead of being sold intact.

Compared to the P38's the L322 parts are still expensive and, I would have thought, will remain so for a few more years yet until they are thought of as no longer current.

I know of one or two rumours that the older L322 are not as rust proof (OK I know it is not rust as such) as the P38, so maybe that is affecting them.

Cannot say anything about the BMW or Mercs but even the old P38 Rangie needs special diagnostics (around £300 worth od kit) so I would have thought owners of the older L322 would be prepared to buy the module required for them.

I recall my boss at the time about 2002 had a '98 Range Rover that was usually serviced in our firm's workshop but something went wrong with the suspension & it had to go to Land Rover main dealer workshop to be fixed. I hate to think how much that cost. I went to collect it in my muddy working gear & reception was like a gin palace, I got given real coffee & biccies while I waited. Land Rover dealers had certainly gone upmarket even then.

These days the suspension on that 98 P38 is the easy and cheap thing to fix. Around £20 for the software and lead to connect a laptop for EAS diagnostics, around £50 for a compressor and around £60 per corner for the air bags.

I hope the L322 prices come down to those sort of levels and if they do will upgrade from the P38, have seen a nice one around £8500 for a 2005 Vogue 4.4

I have seen a couple of L322 in local paper for reasonable prices but running costs and fear of faults is off putting, even though we have a very good independent LR place nearby.
I owned an 89 3.5 efi for a few years, lovely car to drive and made a lovely noise. It did not need a computer to diagnose faults.
I did a fair bit of welding on it, but had some fun greenlaning and gentle off roading. It liked petrol though!
Very good off road with a set of chunky tyres nad steering and diff guards fitted.

It speaks volumes about the spending power of the buyers when I go into the parts dept of our local dealers. Scarves for sale at £119 and biros for £59. I doubt they sell many though.

Worst thing that ever happened to cars was Canbus.

Has anyone ever tried icarsoft diagnostic gear?

I doubt whether icarsoft make diagnostic gear for my Volvo, it's probably too old. The only diagnostic tool I have come across that would do it cost more than the car!
