lol I am aware, that the tow ball doesn't need greased! If you read my initial post you will see that it was brand new and powder coated paint was removed.
Also, the ALKO towball type is related to the distance of the ball from the vehicle, not the ball size apparently to allow for the larger hitch head.
Response from the club:
Jennifer, a towball is a 50mm sphere typically and I'll be very surprised if you have a slightly larger 2" type (common in the US). The AL-KO hitch with stabiliser may be what we call a dry coupling, i.e. there's no grease used on the contact surfaces to the ball but behind all this the spring and latch does need occasional light lubrication otherwise it can get incredibly stiff. I'm wondering if this is all that's wrong.
There's no harm in trying very careful application of something like WD40 into the spring and pivots of the latch, use the supplied tube to keep things precise and make every effort to get nothing on the contact pads that touch the ball.
