Average adult bike is almost width of a car, so mounted on a towbar rack it basically extends the the length of the rear, obviously depends on how many bikes are on the rack.
Just thinking about reversing into a tight spot with possibly two or three bikes on the back which will shorten the distance between car and van..which in turn reduces the available angle to turn?

OP has an Adria which generally have a longer A frame, so should be OK for a couple of bikes from that point of view but as others have said its the weight that is more the issue

I've gone with bikes on the roof in the end after looking at all these options previously, takes away worries over rear axle and noseweights

I do realise that the Op was enquiring about weight but my post was to highlight another possible issue which is surely relevant.
As you say yourself, you put the bikes on the roof to take away any worries.

I do agree in general, but as Adria owners will all know, the distance between the front of caravan and rear of car is generally quite a bit more than most UK built van/car set ups, which is why things like the Fiamma A frame rack can be used on these if weights work

if you can wait a few days, I am having fabricated at the moment a tow ball mount for the A frame. so I can mount a bike carrier on it. once fitted and I am happy with it I will post some photos.

Do you mean like the Fiamma A frame mount or mounting it on tow ball itself - you mention both!

there was a frame available on ebay that mounted in front of locker on the a frame that had a tow ball in the middle that you them mounted your carrier on. the down side to that idea is that the a frame cover had to be drilled and the plastic cover sandwiched between chassis and mounting frame, damage !!!

here we go then:

Bits

Test run

Cut the plastic cover

Inner holes are over the chassis so need to modify the bottom bracket, will hopefully get that done tomorrow.

also checked the nose weight. down to 55KG. moved the spare wheel to under the rear bed, power cable and only 1 gas bottle in the locker.

Can't see the final pictures but can see ones above - interesting idea.
Presumably the main difference to the Fiamma A frame mounted rack is you can then use the tow bar mounted carrier when you get to your destination.

I like that - good mod!

been away for the first time with the bikes on the front, took a while to get the nose weight correct. i.e. 1 gas bottle, child bike seat and light board for the bikes carrier in the locker and nothing else. rest went over the axel. here is the photo, http://1drv.ms/1OTlACj still given up with one drive and photos...
