I run a Merc ML 320, V6, auto, its fantastic, loads of power, around 25 to 35 mpg, depending if Im on Motorway or not, and im sure it will pull my new (next week) Bailey cartagena with no problems.

Its downside, cost of roadtax, about £450 a year and insurance about the same, but its worth it

I suppose it depends on what you want to spend.
We have an older type Kia Sorento, we find it more car like than some of the other 4x4,s. It tow's brilliantly, you can get loads of stuff ib it, it's passed every mot with only a few minor comments and I use it every day to go to work.

yes a lotof cars tow well.It has to be diesel in my view in favour of petrol and my chrysler 300c goes like the wind with or without the caravan.its a 3 ltr turbo deisel and fuel economy is very good.A lot of car for the money.I get 38 mpg on a run,28 round town and 24 to 27 towing.which is good as the car is over 2 tonne and the van is 28ft long.

Do they actually want a large 4x4 that costs a small fortune to run.
or an every day 4x4 that's cheaper to run and can tow like the diesel Skoda superb 4x4,in hatch or estate form

My x5 doesn't cost a small fortune to run. It does 30mpg around town, £400 fully comp insurance. Service every other year costs £215 at main dealer. Nothing failed yet so no repair bills.

Agreed and the extra stability. Even towing a twin axle van the x5 is effortless to drive and no swaying about like you see from std cars.

Our Sorento does over 30 mpg solo, have seen nearly 40.Towing around 25. The older models are thirstier. Plus 7 year warranty.Ours is 3 in August no problems to date.
I do like the Skodas but prefer the Kia for towing.
Woild consider an Octavia vrs as second car but like my Saab convertible too much.

Honda CRV diesel. Ours has 90,000 on the clock and has never ever gone wrong. Going to see how many times round the clock we can go.

The van he has is either 1245 max or 1300 max, depending on the age.
He is looking for something economical to tow with, and for everyday use, so that leaves him a good range of options open, he could even get one of the last Octavia 2 litre tdi, no DPF, this would return 50 plus for everyday use and 34 towing

Best tow car i ever had and still wish i had one, was a land rover 110 csw, 275K in 20 years.

Better than the bloody disco 3 anyday, but they are asking silly money for a 110 these days that the only reason i had a dsco3
