Yes on user payload we don't pack lightly so will have to load carefully. There are four of us. Two adults, and two children so we would have clothes. Realise stuff can be loaded in the car too, but I know from packing the folding camper, it all adds up.

Really appreciate all the advice. We want to get things right and are cautious as new to towing a caravan. It will be quite a step up from the folding camper at 1050 maximum load, shorter and lower profile. At least we have some towing experience though.

Most sites have washing machines now, so one on, one spare, one wash, just take a washing line or hook on dryer
Your payload comes in at 480 pounds, so you have a fair bit to play around with

Hi - I have trimmed down the amount of clothing we take. I couldn't get it down that much with the children but when number 2 came along a couple of years ago, I knew we couldn't take any more and I've reduced our clothing. Probably more work can be done in general with keeping things down. However I think packing the caravan and car to go will be so much easier to do in advance (sorting the folding camper was always a nightmare) and therefore I will be more economic with the packing!

I have used a mondeo for years now and no problem whatsoever.

I have been looking at SUVs as the Mrs likes idea of higher seating position but the ones I have looked at are either no better than the mondeo or don't have very good reports.

So for me it will be a newer mondeo I think, the other in same class that does seem to match is the new Insgnias.

Thank you. I'll not discount a mondeo then and will check out the insignias and also an s-max as some starting points. Thank you. It's good to have suggestions on what actually feels good when towing.

Can't go wrong with an Smax.

Boot is huge, loads of room in the cabin with a highish seating position.

Ours is the 2.2 auto and has a V5 mass in service of 1875 kgs.

We have managed to sort that with a 'sticky mat' so most stuff stay in, but as its Mrs G who uses it most of the time it does not bother me anyway............

Try and get some of those collapsible plastic crates, that's what we use they just fold away when not needed, they come in different sizes as well

I would take your present car to a weigh bridge first, with driver and full tank you may be surprised how much it actually is. At least then you have definitive figure/weight to work with and whether its suitable or not.

Hi

We too have a Sprite major 6TD & an Insignia Sportstourer 2.0 CDTI & i've just checked on the logbook & the mass in service weight is 1730kg. So the match would work out fine. As we've had the caravan sited for the last 2 seasons i haven't towed it very far so cannot comment on what it would be like on a motorway etc.. What i do find is that i think the caravan is quite nose heavy as the water heater is at the front under the O/S seat, but i've never measured the nose weight as i said earlier i haven't towed it very far but if i had to tow it any distance i would measure the nose weight.
