The 2012 onwards CRVs have lost that double shelf in the boot, just one big boot with a retractable tonau cover that we never use, mainly because we have a wheelchair hoist fitted in ours to lift my scooter or manual wheelchair in and out.

Im not sure if the pre2012 models had the reversing camras as part of their spec, but they really do help when hitching up or manouvering into a fairly tight parking space. We negociated a Honda type approved towbar and electrics as part of our deal, after hearing a few horror stories about electrical faults from independently fitted kits, where the Honda softwear update had not been used, causing electrical failures and warning lights to show once hitched up, something to bear in mind if you can manage to get a Honda towpack fitted if buying from a Honda dealer as part of the deal.

Good Luck with your search,

Julia

That's a good move IMO!

2010 models have the camera - agree, makes hitching and parking a whole lot easier.

We got an independent fixed towbar, that supposedly has a generic Honda computer connection, ie not a genuine Honda part, no warning lights etc, BUT the parking alarm beeper things whatever they are called, don't deactivate when hitched up - I think they may be supposed to when towing? So yeah, next time, we'll get one fitted by the dealer as part of the sale. Mega expensive though compared to independent towbar.

Yes, as soon as we are hitched up the rear parking sensors deactivate automatically. The only time ours are set off accidently are if someone dislodges the tow hitch cover to one side, then as soon as we engage reverse gear we get that annoying beeping noise, and someone has to get out and put it straight.

We did have one little mischief maker who thought it was good sport to kick the cover to one side every time he passed our pitch, until l sat watching and waiting for him on my scooter at the side of our car, and managed to catch him mid-kick!

We have a 2007 honda cr-v, high spec with reversing camera and sensors. We had to get the sensors replaced a couple of years ago as we had problems with the factory ones not turning off. But no problems since although I did reverse into another car - outside specsavers

Yes but it depends on spares availability should they be required. Most countries will have overnight spares availability at main dealers of the large european marques but there have been threads on here about non avalability of spares for far eastern makes, Kia and so on and vehicles having to be repatriated.

If the op is going away for a year he needs to check how many Honda dealers there are in countries he is visiting. No vehicle is infalliable. I drive a Citroen because I visit mostly France so I am never more than a few miles from a Citroën garage should I need one with overnight spares delivery.

When my first Mitsubishi ASX was just a year old (and it was its first year of production), I had an accident requiring a new bumper and a new tailgate. The accident happened on a Tuesday. My insurance company collected the car Wednesday morning, and on Friday of the same week they rang to say it was ready and I could have it back that night, but if I was prepared to leave it over the weekend it would give the paint chance to harden.

Should I be worried about the difficulty of spares? I think not.

My 4x4 Mitsubishi ASX achieves 30-33mpg towing our similar weight Bailey. Solo it does 45-50mpg. It towed our caravan over the Alps faultlessly and effortlessly, but then there's a decent 150BHP under the bonnet. Reliability- excellent. Worth a look at as well as the Honda?

The actual towing weight is 1470kg, in reality slightly higher than the advertised towing limit. All the running gear and engine are exactly the same as the Outlander which has a 2000kg towing limit.

... and none of that silly having to reset the car computer when you get a towbar fitted. It senses it automatically.

Am looking at a CRV too - I am going for new/nearly new. I note they have stopped the 2.2 on the new ones and now do a 1.6 Diesel, giving better MPG and producing 156 BHP!

Am a little concerned that Honda are ringing that extra power by wringing every last bit of boost out of the turbo and having had a Nissan turbo go (they had the same approach, turbo working to its max capacity) at a huge cost and a Honda turbo go, though they replaced this FOC even though out of warranty. Likely to stay with the 2.2 if I go for this model.

Cheers

On new ones you'll need to be very careful on weight the auto will only tow 1500 max ( suspect that's the gear box as the manuall is higher)

And only weighs about 1700 as a densely and 1600 as a petrol

Mitsubishi went the other way round, they replaced the 1.8l diesel 148bhp with a 2.3l diesel 148bhp. Both do about the same fuel consumption. At the same time they mated the 2.3l diesel with an auto gearbox.

We bought the 2.2 diesel three years ago and it has been a fantastic tow car. The van is a max 1450kg and the car never hesitates.Honda has such a great reputation for reliability I would hope we won't need a garage, but having had to use Red Pennant with a previous car these things are quickly sorted on the continent.
Fuel consumption continues to improve as we get a few miles on the clock.Solo around town it's low 40's and on a long run high 40's often 50 on a motorway. Towing we get between 28-32 depending on roads and conditions.
Very pleased with our purchase.

Yes, I confirm similar statistics.

Delighted with the CRV in every way.

36mpg towing????? My previous jeep compass used to do 28 mpg but my current outlander has made 25 mpg at best and 22mpg worst. I guess it depends what you are towing. A trailer tent or Eriba puck maybe?

Got to agree with you. Not sure how you can get such good mpg? 36 is about right for mine solo, with no long runs. No way mine could ever achieve 36 whilst towing our van. IMO it is unrealistic to raise the expectations of the OP to expect such a good return whilst towing.

I can confirm that when we tow from Matlock in Derbyshire, upto Scarborough, North Yorkshire, a mixture of Motorways and about 40 miles of A class roads, and we do indeed record an average of 36mpg from setting the trip counter from start to finish on our journey.

We tow a 462 Elddis 2berth Avante, carry a mobility scooter in our boot, 260 porch awning, and our caravan weight is around 1260kg fully laden.

Ok, some of you who tow heavier vans may get slightly lower figures, especially if you have 5 adults onboard and possibly a large dog or two, but we certainly dont have to tow something as light as a trailer tent or a Freedom microlight, Eriba Puck ect to achieve the figures l quoted!

Our old ASX 1.8 (the 150BHP 4wd model), with our Trigano Silver, MTPLO 100kg averaged 37mpg going from the UK 10 Italy, over 1000 miles. (Measured tank to tank, not the computer display!)

With our current Bailey and our newer 2.2 ASX (4wd auto) we never get less than 30mpg towing, and generally can average 33mpg. Same engine, gearbox and oily bits as the Outlander. Normal towing speed is 56mph, same as the lorries.

28 towing, 37 around town, 42 long trips.
Can't complain, its a big, comfortable powerful old thing.
