Me again - sans testicles...
I got in touch with the tow bar people I've used before and they called me with a price. I gave them the car reg just in case....and lo and behold I get a call. They tried to order the towkit from Witter and Witter told them my GC was a recall one. Then a call to Holdens but they don't deal with jeeps any more. Desira were next and a good lad there called James in service dept was a boon. But it gets complicated. As well as a towbar strengthening bracket it needed 2 other recalls. I'll let that pass. But the policy from Jeep was that if there was a 'non approved' towbar on there then they would replace it for one of theirs for free. BUT - if it didn't have one then they would fit the strengthening bar ...but you'd have to remove the bar to fit a towbar!!!!eh...AND they won't sell you a Jeep 'type approved' towbar.
Luckily, James was aware of 2 other Cherokees that had Jeep approved (not jeep ) towbars and he was going to let me know. I told the wife and I am now minus my knackers and ready for a plate of Winalot. I don't think we'll be going away for xmas.
So I can have one but I can't have one...Help!

Are you sure that they are not getting mixed up with the Cherokee and the Grand Cherokee?

If you look through Practical Caravan magazine archives it has an article on the subject. The models concerned are Grand Cherokee 10/01/92 to 27/10/98    and Cherokee 2002 to 2007.

May find if the recall has not be done insurance would be void

From VOSA for Jeeps built between 01/01/1992 and 27/10/1998. If built after this date, then there is no issue. Seems the OP's Jeep is affected.

Concern :      RISK OF FIRE
Description :      If the vehicle is involved in a rear end collision, then it is possible that the fuel tank could be damaged. This can then result in a fuel leak, which if in the presence of an ignition source, then a vehicle fire could ensue.
Remedial Action :
Vehicle Id :      1J4EX58SOTC140311 to 8Y4GZ78YGW1818306

Check your vehicle ID number against those listed from the VOSA list. You originally said it was a 98 then thought it was a 99. Could make a whole lot of difference. Time to ask the dealer a few questions, if you have not already done so. after all this is a guy, who by his own admissions deals a lot with Jeeps. Having said that, recalls aren't the easiest things to pick up on, possibly the previous owners ignored the recall letter if they ever received it.
The space taken by the tow bar is, apparently, needed for the new bracing bar and there does not at present seem to be an EU approved tow bar for this model, hard to believe.
In the past, like others, I have fitted by own tow bars, even made a couple for my own use. these days though, it has to be EU approved I guess.

Just had another look back at the PFJones website and it looks like it depends on which Grand Cherokee it is.

The link I showed previously was for the 1992-1999 Grand Cherokee which appears to be OK to tow with and 3 towbars shown on their site.

The problem seems to be with the 1999-2005 versions which PFJones states are no longer a towing vehicle.

Thanks for the interest boys and girls. My head is spinning. But I have had some superb help from Desira in Norwich. There's a chap called James in the service dept who went above and beyond his job description to help me. He has checked my GC and it is one of the recall jeeps. But, there's light at the end of the tunnel.
He's booked it in for the towbar recall and I am getting one fitted from another supplier. Then (bizarrely) Desira (on behalf of Jeep) will remove my towbar and replace it, free of charge with a type approved one. I'm insured and I can tow and I might get one of my balls back....not both, because it'll be in the new year when they do the work. Plus 2 other recalls which the previous owner missed?
There's a lot of confusion and mis-information out there. The people who know are the people work for the main dealers. I'm more stupified by the sheer daftness of it but it'll get sorted and then I can tow whatever I want. Also, 2 towbar fitters had different information from Witter - conflicting info which doesn't help. Ho hum...Off to find some way of getting some brownie points!

I rang tow trust this afternoon, in my previous post I had said that some one on the Jeep forum had said that they had obtained one from them. They said they had scrapped all the tow bars for these models because of the recall.
Still its good to hear you are fixed up, great stuff, and fair play to James (he must be a Norwich lad)
As for brownie points, well that's a whole different subject starter, not one in which I would be of any use.

Yep, Desiras approach to what is essentially an 18 yr recall is to do all of the work for free, offer me a loan car and ring around helping me. A bloody sight better than the other car dealers we used to deal with...vauxhall to name one.

Well, after reading the instructions with the Witter towbar I spent an hour or two getting the old nuts and bolts out ready to fit the thing. Except it seems Witter have sent a load of metric bolts when I needed USA fittings - especially for the studs that Witter seem to think come out but don't.That's the thing about studs!
Sometimes I wonder what I did in a previous life...

The witter towbar is on...and in a couple of weeks it will come off - completely unused! Go figure... Mind you, I might get me other nut back. She's keeping it in the freezer to prevent damage. And she's seen a bailey pageant fixed bed 'van...gawd!
