An old type Hyundai Santa-fe would be my choice. Something like this with FSH,http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hyundai-Santa-Fe-2-0CRTD-CDX-DIESEL-4X4-SUPERB-CLEAN-EXAMPLE-/272296683377?hash=item3f6625a771:g:pKIAAOSwOVpXetKg
This is worth using if buying an older car, its free and gives you some idea of its history.https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/?_ga=1.127813581.1966237524.1452259463
ust a quick update been aproved for a car loan today so got £5000/5500 to spend on a car. It has widened the options and I'm seriously looking at the CRV. Still like the Rav but a bit worried about the 2.2 diesel issues apparently only affected 5% of cars but a new engine required if affected. That scares me!
Does my new budget change anyone's opinion on Best Buy?
Your budget would get you an early Mk 3 CRV CDTi (2007) with about 100K miles on the clock. This has trailer stability control when towing.
My son owns a 59 plate CRV CDTi with 80K+ miles which I previously owned. It has been totally reliable from new, averaging 42 mpg solo and 28 mpg towing.
If you do test drive one of these there are a few things to check:
i) Honda clutches are generally weak, especially when used for towing. Ours started to slip occasionally at 70K but it has not become any worse.
ii) The SE and ES have 17inch wheels. The EX has 18 inch and some cars were fitted with the optional 19 inch. While the bigger wheels look good they provide a much harder ride and tyres are considerably more expensive to replace.
iii) If the car is fitted with a detachable towbar check that it engages properly as the bar is very exposed and can rust badly.
Skoda Octavia estate, 1.9 or 2ltr tdi both will tow your van and with loads of space. You may get lucky and find a 4x4 version in your price range, look on auto trader
I'm a little bit confused now! I have found two identical cars (Honda CRV diesel) both have tow bars. The price is almost exactly the same. Both have full service history via main dealer and mot history check indicates that they have been cared for. However one is a 2007 wit 73k miles and the other is a 2009 with 89k. So the question is would you rather have the newer car or one with less miles. Instinct tells me less miles as they are identical but I just wondered your opinions please.
Get a look underneath and see what isn't open to immediate scrutiny. Check state of the exhaust for example, what life is left in brakes.
Fewer miles always gets my vote, but .....
I think I have found the car! It's a CRV another on an 07 plate with 72000 and FSH its immaculate however the salesman did say that a small area had been painted but I couldn't see it despite him showing me. The dealer is a Honda dealer.
Lovely inside (Es trim) obviously cared for. Was a nice drive but clutch felt high. The gear change felt a bit notchy as well but I was assured this is quite normal!?! Checked the diff - all fine.
The price is 6500ish and as its 07 it's not an approved warranty it's a 3 month one due to age of car. After some haggling they are replacing the clutch, brakes and discs and giving it a 12 month mot. The price will be in the region of £6200. I have asked to sleep on it.
I might add it has the witter single electric tow bar fitted.
Would also add that the FSH is predominately Honda but the last three have been independent. It was actually owned by Honda for a while initially.
Service history is at least every 10000 miles and on occasion lower than that.
I think I'm pretty happy. Would have liked a slightly newer car and the 12 month warranty but with the money we have it seems a reasonable deal.
Feel free to pass comment and thank you for all your input it has been invaluable!
Agreed 6350 with all the above jobs done. Paid £500 deposit and 30 mins later I get a phone call them trying to get out of it because not enough money in sale to pay for clutch and fly wheel. Told them that's a disgrace and I have a signed order form stating that they will do jobs and I have paid deposit. Told them I'm not budging and they need to honor agreement. Ringing back!
When I read your earlier post I was amazed that the dealer had agreed to replace clutch, brakes and discs as that's well over £1000 and the flywheel is even more. It sounds as if the salesman didn't check with the workshop how much it was going to cost.
If it's all in writing then you have a contract which they should honour.
They offering to do it now! Problem is I have lost a little bit of faith in them.
I have also found another one that is approved 12 month Honda. Slightly less miles. Slightly newer. New clutch and brakes this week. More or less the same money. Tow bar etc.. Same model. Fsh serviced every 7000 miles. Proper confused!
