Hi, we have a petrol CRV, 4WD version, 2013. It's the manual version though not auto. The engine is pretty weak, we tow a small camping trailer 450kg max load and that struggles uphill on motorways, you have to plan ahead with gears for hills or overtakes etc, you can't just put your foot down and get out of a situation.
I've read the auto feels even more weak, unless you put it in Sequential mode and change gears using the paddles.

MPG is nothing special, I get 35mpg mainly driving around town, I guess the auto would get more like 28-30

In all other respects though it is a fantastic car and I don't think there are any petrol SUV's with much more oomph. Maybe an old Lexus RX hybrid.

How does a 2litre car struggle with 450kgs trailer. My 1.6 Mini Clubman tows our 500-600kgs folding camper with no issues. Sounds like something is wrong with it

Probably because the kerbweight of the CRV is much greater than that of a Mini Clubman to start with, back in the mid 1980s l traded up a 1.3 Honda Civic for a 1.6 Ho da Accord, both towing a lightweight ABI Monza Caravan. To my suprise, the smaller engined and lighter Civic made the better towcar, the extra power from the Accord 1.6 engine was clearly being used up to carry the heavier body of the Accord.

Hi i tow a 1000kg pennine pathfinder with a 2.0L petrol Honda CRV automatic and have done so for many years and 2 different models of same car ,we have towed all over the uk and france for many years .here is my take on it as a tow car .
i would not want to tow anything much heavier as it tows 1000kg very easily and as never once made me feel uneasy or struggled ,but i think anything over 1000kg on very steep hills would struggle ,also fuel consumption, towing and solo is dire , very low 20s towing and high 20s solo around town ,and the most ever achieved is 40mpg on long run not towing with cruise set to 60mph , i choose the Honda for all round use and reliability ,its a great car but not in auto mode for towing anything above 1000kg ,in my opinion

I’m quite aware in the difference in weights of the Mini and the CRV. The CRV has 30 plus more horsepower and almost double the amount of torque compared to the Mini(190Nm compared to 118Nm). My point was that a 2.0l engine shouldn’t struggle with a 450kg trailer.
