we are toying with a Shogun LWB, VW Touareg or X5. It will be used as my main commute vehicle 10 miles away, we are aware of mpg which will be low in commuting.

Highly recommend Hyundai Santa Fe - 2010 model.Just sold mine after 5 and a half years of owning mine.Never missed a beat when towing.Had the new model been as good , and not was it not for costing the earth for a newer model, I would have had another.
But I would not pay what they are now new, or nearly new so ended up buying a new Ford Ranger.Tows the van really well, and living where I do will keep me mobile through all weathers

Sorry, but you are very wrong. Any 4x4 will get stuck on even moderate off road conditions with road tyres. The best 4x4 out there needs decent tyres to cope off road. I have had 3 LRs, 1 Disco, 2 L200s and now own a Ford Ranger, all had ATs fitted. Without them it might as well be a Ford Focus.👍

If the articulated lorries are having to overtake you, your driving to slow, you should endeavour to drive at least 60 MPH, most Speedos actually under read, they may indicate 60 but your actually only doing 57.

Also if you want to be safer get a Disco 3/4 or LR110, RR Vouge
Shogun and X5 are both good models also.

Good luck with whatever you pick as your tow car.

We are overtaking the lorries, not them overtaking us. We are comfortable towing at between 60 & 65mph. We don't go aboue this even when in France and the spped is higher, but still get sucked in when overtaking the lorries.
We've been trying a few out this weekend and like the VW Touareg 3.0 - good alround towing and towny driving. Think we will go for this. The Shoguns weren't that comfortable to sit in, this is a factor because when we are towing its generally down the bottom of France, Italy etc so do big miles.

You need to read the link for speed limits towing in France, 80/90kph if your plated GTW is over 3,500kg.

Tbf the 56mph limit for larger outfits in France does seem to be largely ignored.

Does the old model Santa Fe have the 4WD lock?

Giving up the low box on my old model Sorento, the lock swayed me to buy one!

my 2010 model did.2 wheel drive under normal driving and 4x4 kicked in when it detected slip.
But also had a button to put in permanent 4x4 for slower speeds and auto disengaged at higher speeds when 4x4 wasnt needed.

I think it locks up to 29mph, and starting off in 4WD is better than relying on the car to go in itself.

I'm just about to advertise my 2010 santa fe 75k miles, only towed about 3000 miles but it towed 1650kg effortlessly. Will be in the free ads section by tomorrow once I've cleaned it today :)

Hi what about the Volvo xc90 d5, heavy enough and 4x4 we get about 25mpg when towing a 1600kg pegasus caravan
