The warranty direct index is meaningless. It is based on claims on extended warranties purchased on secondhand cars.

Or should we just assume that Hondas, Toyotas, Mazdas etc. are better serviced and their owners just drive their cars more sympathetically?

Yes actually we can. The makes you mention are more likely to be bought by private buyers who will do less mileage. The worst cars in survey are all higher end cars that will have tended to do high mileage by first users who probably did not own the car. The European makes will mostly tend to have their first lives on personal or business lease, the larger cars may be doing high business mileage.

It's mistake to believe that ex company cars have all been serviced on the button. Many miss services due to poor fleet management & others get serviced at Halfords rather than main dealer.

Most breakdowns are caused by component failure, anything from egr valve to turbo & everything in between. All these components are made by outside manufacturers that supply all the major vehicle manufacturers.

The common denominator in long term reliability in any car will be good driver & good servicing.

44,000 is really low for it to start having such serious issues.
Are you sure it hasn't been 'clocked' or had the s**t driven out of it before you got it.

Nope, definitely not. It was new when I got it, and I definitely haven't driven it aggressively or anything! I may have gently bumped it into a few walls when parking, but nothing more than a couple of scratches.

The mechanic said I was really unlucky that the turbo had gone, he said if definitely shouldn't have gone so soon. :(

Why not consider an estate car, plenty of load / carry space in the rear, good payload, so you can get some more camping gear!!!
In 4.5 years with lots of short journeys too and from work, have never had any DPF problems, normal running keeps it clear, it also does a programmed regen every 400-600 miles. If stationary or in slow moving traffic, you know when it does a regen, engine revs go up to 1,000rpm and the fans kick in to clear the build up of heat, for around 10mins. So do not be put off with a diesel engine.

Skoda Octavia Estate 2.0TDi, better still if you can get a 4x4 variant.

I loved my last Skoda. Had a Fabia diesel and I LOVED that little car. I only got rid of it because I needed something bigger for the kids and buggies and all that.

I have looked at the Octavia 4x4 and I definitely like the look of it. The one single thing that puts me off it (or any estate car) is the parking. I'm OK at parking. Not brilliant, but not completely awful either. But some of the parking at the places I work is really, really tight. As in there are a few car parks with spaces that are smaller than my car, so I can't use them, and if I can avoid having a really long or wide car, then that would be great.

I realise this is probably really illogical having said that I like the Sportage, which equally doesn't fit into some of these spaces at work...

Might go to the Skoda dealer this weekend!

What ever you get next needs to be petrol, just over 6 k a year on your car I am assuming is mostly short journeys.

The newer diesel simply don't like this. They don't get warm enough to be running efficiently and oil, diesel etc just sludges up causing all manner of problems.

If it has reversing sensors you will be ok , they not only cover the back but to the sides as well, with a display on the radio screen, when it gets to the red mark your 2 feet away

Kia have a good warranty, and are very reliable. We are on our third Sorento, all have been very good.
Skoda have a good reputation. My neighbours lad has an Octavia VRS, that is a nice car!
