I am currently on hols on Austria with my caravan and had this problem twice so far this week. My solution on both occasions was to whack the side of the hitch with a big hammer while the mechanism was trying to retract. This worked both times. My theory is that there is some friction on the mechanism somewhere that needs a little help to unlock. I know this sounds a bit drastic but a little percussion engineering is sometimes all that's needed. Having said that I'm going to leave it deployed until I get back home!
You have to hit the tow bar with a hammer to get it to work properly, Surely that is some kind of joke, Or is the JD power survey correct.
