Am biased obviously but I now have a dream of a car 2008 CRV, even mates who have updated to the new CRV's wish they had kept their Mk3's.
Mine has no DPF, has 110,400 on the clock, never heard of slipping clutches because of no DPF, not even on the CRV forum, do not disbelieve it though, had a 407 once that the clutch slipped on, but that had a DPF.
It is getting a treat this year, going to be garage serviced first time since 89,000, I do the oil and brakes and filters every May.

That said my workmate tows with a Sang Yong and swears by it.

Another work mate has a Range Rover he swears at it, he stopped towing with it as the AA towed it and the van more than he did. He loves the RR though.

It horses for courses, go look, test drive, and enjoy the one you like.

DPF = Diesel Particle Filter nothing to do with clutches.

Do you mean DMF = Dual Mass Flywheel? A DMF doesnt cause the clutch to slip. A Worn drive plate or pressure plate causes it to slip. Or cooking the clutch and glazing the friction surface, which essentially polishes it and causes it to slip.

A DMF adds approx £250 to a clutch change these days, just the way the world goes i guess. The same way electronic ignition costing £80 to £400+ replaced a set of points and a condenser sub £5.

Asbestos free brade pads caused the dics to wear at a much faster rate than with asbestos pads.

Hi Haymat
We tow our 1350kg MTPLM caravan with our X-trail (diesel, manual) & it tows really well. We've never towed with any other vehicle, so can't offer a useful comparison, but have chatted with other owners from time to time & many have commented that they're much better than previous towcars. Purchased our original from new in 2008, 60k absolutely trouble-free miles & only changed to another one (type T31 again) because of the Caravan Club offer on the last of line models, as we weren't keen on the new version. 100kg towball limit on the manual version gives plenty of leeway, but think it's lower on automatic version.
Mpg around 40 (& we live in a hilly rural area), about 28 towing.

105,000 miles in our CRV. Never broken down or even had niggling faults. Have just had our first unexpected bill - £400 for new front shockers. Acres of space and excellent comfort. 40mpg not towing, 28mpg towing.
Have towed all over the UK and France. Will run it into the ground and buy the same again.

I have had a working life time of towing, plus caravanning all over France.

I currently have a Kuga 2.0 Diesel, 180 bhp, AWD, Auto. It is the best tow car I have ever had. 40mph, 28/30mph towing. Absolutely effortless towing around 1350kg.

People will always have their favourites, I can only speak for what I have now.

Good luck in your search. 😀👍

We have a 2010 CRV 2.2 i-dtec EX.

Cons.. it too suffers from a squeaky clutch pedal. We've also just had to replace the EGR (?) pipe, which wasn't a cheap fix - the cabin smelt terribly of diesel fumes, it's a common fault with some Honda models. MPG not as good as the earlier post, we've done just under 29,000 miles since September 2013, overall it's done 30.81mpg - but we rarely go on long runs. Towing the Milan it gets about 23mpg. I've only ever broken 40mpg twice in three years, (true mpg recorded between every fill up since we've owned the car).

On the positive, it tows the van really well, has bags of room, four wheel drive when it needs it (rarely) - how many sites are just grass fields? Loads of leg room in the rear as the floor is flat. Bags of extras with the EX version, sat nav, heated seats, rear camera etc. Other than the repair to the EGR and said squeaky pedal, it's been totally reliable.

I'm having a browse around every now and then for a replacement, thinking of a Outlander Phev, as the newer CRVs have a smaller engine, plus with the lack of mileage and long runs, we might be better off for the majority of our journeys using electric only. But have use of a large SUV type car to tow the van with petrol when we need it.

Any CRV questions happy to help...

Hi Haymat
The Kuga returns between 27 to 31 mph depending on headwinds when towing & around 38 39 solo, the onboard computer says I'm getting 34 overall so quite happy with that

Like Mike3003, we also tow with a Kuga, 15 plate 2.0 diesel 180 brake (manual). We averaged around 29 - 32mpg towing our Sterling Explorer twin axle. When not towing it's usually 40 mpg, and on long runs it's been known to creep up to 47. Just swapped our caravan for a much smaller single axle, 1355kg max, and we had to remind ourselves the van was on the back-:)

We have not had one single thing go wrong with it in the two years we've had it.

We'll be saying goodbye to the Kuga this week, but have to say it's the best towcar we've ever had. Here's hoping the Edge is as good as the Kuga, which we have no doubt it will be.

Blimey, how far back are you going. Please read other topics, a modern Auto makes a far better tow car, car in general. I was let down by an 18 month old Mitsubishi L200 5 years ago, but it would not stop me buying another.

Sterling Europa laden mass 1195

Why would you want a massive vehicle for that weight , when most saloons of estates will tow it, don't forget the road tax is about to sky rocket on the new larger engined models
