Yep SamandRose, I do have that option, but I would have to pay the dealer price for a retro fitted towbar so £800!.

So it works out cheaper for me to get my local VW approved fitting company to do the job for £400.

Like you say the car goes back with the towbar fitted, and the crash bar in the boot in my case.

I suppose the difference is that you are using VW finance and not VW group leasing.

I have been trying to get the firm to provide the car with a towbar for the last 12 years, but no one is interested to take ownership of my request, they just say it's not possible to order the car with a factory fit towbar.

Although I do find that hard to believe, especialy when they have managed to get automatic cars for staff that have medical needs, and in one case a completely different car, as a member of staff could not fit into a Golf, even though he did drive one for 4 years before they gave him a Skoda Superb on medical grounds.

The irony of the guy with the Skoda is that he left the firm 4 months after getting the car!

I am obviously not getting through to the right person at the firm I work for.

Her Outlander is a 2015MY model...

Yes, they do say it'll tow 1500kgs, but our van is 1500kgs, and even the dealer we went to see (for future reference), said not to tow 1500kgs.

I wouldn't tow ANYTHING with a PHEV anyway, the way the CVT gearbox and engine howls on when it's having to work when driving normally and NOT towing is very unnerving...

why does it howl? I have a BMW PHEV and it doesn't do that. In fact is goes like sh*t of a shovel!

Francias the reason why they wont buy one is the £800 cost would have to be spread over the 24 months lease, so your company would have to pay an extra £33 per month.

all optional extra's are just depreciated over the lease term down to nothing & they dont take in to account that it will increase the residual value.

i have the same argument every 4 years, funny we get metallic for free, it actually reduces the lease price as they class that as increasing the rv.
but leather better wheels parking sensors and panoramic roofs count for nothing

Four years I could live with, but we only get to keep the cars for 2 years, I still can't see why the firm can't order a lease car with factory fitted towbar, there would be no payment required and increase in lease cost per month would be peanuts.

The only change would be to my P11D Tax, so that the BIK would be marjinaly more.

I really do need to find out more, rather than squander £400 every two years if I don't need to.

Francais the increase to your business is £800 over 24 months so £33 per month thats why the wont pay,

My last bar was just over £400 I just take it as £100 per year, but it would p me of if it was every 2 years

Never had a problem with any lease companies (fleet serve, VAG leasing,etc.) as long as the towbar is either left on the vehicle, or removed and any fitting mods made good. Current lease car is a Volvo XC60 which tows my Unicorn Valencia like a dream.

Just updating post here.....


She's rang the lease company for advice, and if possible to change her car early.

They've came back and said, YES! To having a bar fitted, and allowed to tow caravan, BUT....

The insurance WILL NOT cover the caravan, only the car...

So, a bit of advice needed here then thanks...

We have Green Flag for the breakdown cover.

So should we then get a policy for the (hopefully not) accident cover...?

Car insurance usually covers caravan for third party risk, and a separate caravan insurance policy will not be expensive. Green Flag provide a car and caravan breakdown policy so you may well be able to obtain an upgrade to your current Green Flag cover. Your current cover will provide rescue for your caravan if your car is damaged or breaks down but not if the problem is confined to your caravan.
