To be honest the caravan sales people didn't actually tell you any lies. It is legal for the car to tow it, what they did fail to tell you was you cant put anything in it. Id go back to them and tell them to shove the caravan where the sun doesn't shine as they have lead you down the garden path. If that doesn't work go to trading standards and see what they say.

I can’t believe anyone would spend a not insignificant amount of money on a caravan without checking if their car was up to the job of towing the caravan. When we purchased our folding camper last year, I was googling the hell out of all the info I could find about what our car could or couldn’t tow( the tow bar was already on the car when we purchased it) Likewise we changed our car a couple of months ago and I did the research on wether the new car could tow our camper or not.
The info is readily available and a caravan sales person isn’t necessarily the right person to give you that info. Gone are the days you had to take a gamble and hope you’d be ok towing a big box behind whatever car you had on the drive.
I’d be looking at getting my money back from the caravan dealer and rethinking my options on what my car is capable of towing safely
