So the price quoted does not include the electrics to recharge the caravan battery or run the fridge?

Its just the lighting side they connect up.

£175 for the detachable brink towbar. £150 for the dedicated loom.

So thats £200 - £300 fitting costs, its an easy fit shouldnt be anywhere near that.

One question to ask when getting quotes though, does it include the battery/fridge power connections which is an extra £115 at Halfords.

Try CDF they will come and fit the towbar.

We have to use Halfords for our company car servicing and they are woeful. I’ve used 4 different branches now and none of them can even complete a service correctly with either missing something, damaging the car or buggering up the service computer.

We run over 100 cars on our fleet so I know my experience is also typical, rather than unlucky.

I’d find a good local towbar specialist irrespective of cost.

I am changing our car in Feb to a new Seat leon 2.0 tdi estate received a quote from Indespension (mentioned by Francais) £280, vat inc, universal wiring with twin electrics £420, vat inc, with dedicated electrics but with 13 pin adapters for my 7 pin caravan. Waiting for the other companies I emailed to reply. I think both prices will be hard to beat.

Yep, for a new car then it has to be the VS electrics, to save any future warranty issues.

£420 is quite good, mine was a little cheaper as I opted for wired for Trailer, if you have it wired for caravan then they need to sort the fuse in the cars fuse box, so a bit more work involved.

Personally if going for caravan wiring I would go for Single 13 pin, you can get a 13 pin plug that will accept the two cables that your caravan has for the two 7 pin plugs, a fairly easy DIY job.

Or better still take the caravan twin cables and make into one cable, for a 13 pin plug.

In fact I bet if indespension are fitting a £420 towbar, they would do the caravan conversion from two 7 pin to Single 13 pin, for not very much money if you don't fancy DIY.

Ive never had dedicated wiring fitted to any of my new cars & never had a problem, Indespension made a right cockup of my s max bar.

My current mondeo was fitted by warrington towbars and was far cheaper than, all the quotes around the Manchester area, that was for a Witter detachable so good quality as well.

different cars have different prices so you just cant compare between makes and models.

Had a few more quotes from tow bar fitters and most of them have been charging £550 - £600 but I have found a towbar fitter in Lincoln which has given me a quote for £470 for a Westfalia detachable towbar with dedicated electrics fitted (inc VAT).

Big risk that Bessie, not going for dedicated electrics on a new car, it could lead to warranty hell! not worth the risk imho for the £100 or so difference.

It is no greater risk than fitting aftermarket dedicated electrics by an independent supplier. The warranty would still be affected if faulty workmanship or faulty parts caused other problems.

To be absolutely safe you would need to specify the OEM approved towbar and electrics when the car was first ordered. Any problems are then down to the dealer to sort out.

Not according to the fitters that I have spoken to HumberWolf, in fact some refuse to fit the lash up relay bypas units, and will only fit the VS kits to new and lease vehicles, due to horror stories with none VS kits.

I think this depends on the manufacturer. Some cars (mostly German) must have dedicated electrics to enable the safety systems to work correctly when towing. However many cars do not and for these owners the risks are no greater whichever system is chosen. It all comes down to the quality of the fitter.

A good majority of car manufacturers don’t fit tow bats at the factory anyway. Most are fitted by 3rd parties at the docks or dealer before delivery. Just make sure it’s a good brand of towbar and electrics and if you’re really worried find out what brand the manufacturer uses and use the same. For example Audi use Westfalia.

Francais I was quoted £150 difference between the 2 prices, I’ve had 4 bars fitted so in my eyes that’s £600 to me.
I’ve never had a issue and as pointed out my bars are always top brands and fitted by a professional fitters with a guarantee. £600 fitted is going some for something that I hand back and get nothing from.

I was told by more than one fitting agents that some dealers use universal wiring as well.

Plus the original op’s car is out of the warranty period anyway

A growing number of manufacturers, especially European ones are now fitting tow bars on the production line. For example:
VW, Skoda, Audi, Seat, Land Rover.

Not being covered by the warranty is just scaremongering.

A properly fitted towbar with bypass wiring wont cause damage to the vehicle. The vehicles wiring is powering a relay instead of the lights, which uses a miniscule amount of power to switch the relay.

You can get more variation in the standard bulbs you fit, it would be like saying fitting a brake light bulb not bought from the dealer will invalidate your warranty.

IF fitted PROPERLY there wont be any issues.

Sorry, but you are not totally correct. The fitting of a non-approved part whilst a vehicle is under warranty can result in any warranty claims against any part that may be affected by that fitting being refused.

There have been reports on various VAG forums of damage being caused following the fitting of by-pass systems to their CanBus systems. I know of one Yeti owner who ended up with a bill of over £1000 for a new part loom and the Body Control Unit. That case ended up in Court. He won!

Fitting a by-pass system does not allow the full functionality of various systems, including vehicle stability control systems, bulb failure warning systems and alarm systems. I have evidence of all those problems on several Skoda Yetis that had this type of system fitted.

As vehicles get more and more complicated it is getting to the stage where the only safe method is to do the job properly, and fit a correctly designed loom.

Llanidavis my cars have been in for various jobs over the years without any issues, including w/wipers that wouldnt turn off on my s max again a warranty job.
Could just be vag trying to screw money out of the consumer again.
