SUVs are brilliant on motorways, far more comfortable to drive, and my 180bhp SUV is much, much quicker than my previous Mondeo Estate, which was brilliant by the way, and one of the best cars I have owned. I really rate the Mondeo, but no match for the Skoda Superb, but then no Estate car is.

But I could never go back to an Estate saloon or hatchback again, not after 2 years of having an SUV. I like the look of the new Skoda Kodak, I think that would be my first choice now and may change later in the year..

My BMW badge snob mate has a 3 Series Estate Thing ( horrible car) got into mine and his first comment was how easy it was to get in and out, and how nice it was to be sat up. He will see the light, I certainly want to get him educated about the BMW......It is a horrible car to ride in, my old Ford Anglia 109E was more comfortable! 😀👍

I like to step into a car, not crouch into it, but we are all different.

It's the best car I have towed with as well tows my 2011 Swifr Charisma 545 brilliant

Steve, how is your search doing? We're abroad at the moment but have been watching your snow on the Citizen website. I've been glad of the 4x4 several times in the last week.

Rob

PS 19 degrees here today!

Seen several 4x4s, over bankings, owners think because they are 4x4 they can drive normally in these snow conditions, as with every vehicle just slow down

Skoda Yeti 4x4 also good, if you can find one, owners are reluctant to part with them.

Theres plenty of comments here suggesting autos over manuals, am I right that autos cost more to tax than the same in manual with a lower mpg also dont an auto have a lower towing weight limit too I may be wrong

Not necessarily to all of those things, it depends on the car. Some autos have a lower towing weight but by no means all. Lower Mpg, well that was true many years ago, but these days there's not that much difference, if any. As for more to tax, I've never heard that one before. I suppose it would depend on whether the emissions from a particular vehicle put it just into the next tax band, but there can't be many vehicles that would apply to. The road tax depends on the emissions these days, not what gearbox the car has.

In my opinion, the advantages of an auto far outweigh any possible disadvantages.

yes colin I dint make it clear it seems autos have higher emissions I have been looking at possible choices of a biggish car purely to tow with recently and one I am quite keen on is Ł150 to tax in manual but Ł240 in auto with a lower max tow too but as im sure youre right it may not be the same for all cars

Once you have had an auto, for solo or towing, you will never go back to a manual.

The first 35 years or so of driving were, predominantly, with a manual, I went over to Auto about 6 years ago and still cannot work out why I did not do it years before. A far better driving experience, and the towing experience is a country mile better. Absolutely a no brainier mate. 😀👍

My Wife wasn't too keen on an auto until she drove one. That was back in 2004 and every car she's had since then have been automatic.

Having said that, it's a personal choice.

As for auto's being more expensive to tax. As has been said, until very recently it depended solely on the C02 emissions (for new cars)

Some auto gearboxes ie cars fitted with older Torque converter g/boxes were heavier on fuel and therefore Co2, hence would be dearer to tax. But the more modern torque boxes, CVT or DSG versions can be lower on emissions and can in some case be cheaper. Also, modern DSG type gearboxes often provide better performance as well as MPG when mated to the same engine as a manual. However, as I say it's purely a personal choice, each to their own.

I have had autos for years, starting with a Mk3 Zodiac back in the early 1970s. I was very reluctant to go auto, but after having that one I have only had autos since. My current car is an older auto with a torque converter, which is my preference. The newer autos without torque converters are apparently more efficient (so I am told) but I still prefer a torque converter as for one thing they need less gears, and for another they should really be called "torque-doublers" as that's what they effectively do. Even with these older types, there is more difference between two different drivers in the same car than there is between the auto and manual versions.

Autos are great for towing as the power delivery is smoother with no hesitation during gear changes. Just a constant pull, no need to back off the power when changing gear.

Colin

Well you'll be delighted to hear Colin, that the newest BMW's/Jags etc are using traditional type Auto boxes once more. These newer TC type g/boxes are at least as efficient as the DSG types. But, they tend to be 8 or 9 speeders.

Can't have it all I guess?

But what weight is it going to be towing, i can't see a referance to that anywhere?

Interesting! However, I can't quite understand why a box with a torque converter needs so many gears. A 2 to 1 variable ratio TC plus a 4 speed gearbox is like having more than 8 gears anyway.
