Audi Q7 s line - excellent, way more expensive than Shogun
BMW X5 or X6 m50d - Its a BMW, nuff said.
Jeep Grand Cherokee - Will last half as long as a Shogun
Land Rover Discovery -1/10th as reliable as a Shogun
VW Touareg - My second choice after a Shogun
i have a .....shogun a 2014 SG4
its an awesome towcar but a rangerover it is not...
but i like it.
i looked at Touaregs bacause i could get one for the same price as the shogun but i wanted 7 seats and a huge boot.
it has a payload of 1000kgs, not many cars offer that. it can tow upto 3300kg and with a kerb weight of 2200kg 85% would be 1870kg
i can carry 3 adult bikes on the spare wheel. an inflatable boat and outboard motor in the boot. an awning in the boot and still tow may caravan up steep gradients without slowing down.
its a much bigger vehicle than the Touareg.
the shogun may well be outside the requirments of the OP and they may not appreciate the fuel economy and agricultural nature. the Agricultural nature though does make it robust and if you have a mk4 there are very few reported problems.
Whatever we choose will be “my” car as I tend not to need one very often. Work, town and supermarket are all less than a mile from home. If I want to go into either of our local cities then I get the bus as it is cheaper than car park fees!
So criteria is to tow the van within all the recommended limits.
All other values such as tax, insurance, economy, cost then start to add on. So if a larger vehicle is cheaper to run then that would be ok. I don’t mean fuel economy if it’s a gas guzzler but cheaper in other ways that’s ok. I mean servicing and repairs.
And I may still just go seasonal as we tend to go to the same area all the time. Our main holiday is in USA with our grandkids but it’s not a holiday, so like to go away a lot of week ends over the summer, and maybe Christmas. We stay within 2 hours of home, at towing speed.

go and see a shogun, i see from the other thread you are looking at land cruisers. they are as big if not bigger than the shogun and have a very underpowered engine, unless you buy a big engined model. but if you dont need the size and agricultual capability the Touareg is probably more up your street. i think land cruisers are on a par with the shogun in terms of agriculturalness. the Touareg is not really an "offroader" like the shogun and landcruiser.
