To be honest.
If any of them cars on that list go wrong.
It's not going to be a cheap fix.
Any can go wrong at any time.
Touch wood mines only been normal wear and tear, nothing major.
Now i have said that lol !!!!

Thank you for all the comments. Some of the suggestions don’t have the desired kerbweight or noseweight which is why I disregarded them. We had looked at twin cabs but they still didn’t have the kerbweight.
I have seen a couple of 2016 plates on autotrader for Touareg and Landcruiser that I think we will find local dealers and see what they have. I think this is a good time of year to be looking as the new 2018 trade ins are reaching the forecourts.

I still think you would get a fairly new Rexton to do the job and it would still have a few years manufacturers warranty left on it to help if you did encounter any problems. A Rexton would probably be around an 86 to 90% match depending on the exact model.

Thanks, but swapping the Antara for a Rexton still gives us a higher than recommended ratio and a possible problem with nose weight.
It’s a minefield.

We only do weekends at present our main holidays are in America where our family live. We tend to go to the same area so I may just look for a seasonal pitch. The Antara is 97% ratio and possible noseweight difficulty.

An 88% ratio is a lot better than a 97% ratio. I think the noseweight limit on a Rexton is over 100kg, the limit on an alko stabiliser hitch is 100kg so no noseweight problem.

I don't know how big your budget is but I think the price of an Audi Q7 which is 5 years old will still be higher than a 2 year old Rexton with 3 years unlimited mileage warranty left on it.

The 85% recommendation is only a recommendation, if you have a suitable vehicle and 30 years experience then 88% will be fine.

Will certainly have a look, thanks for the suggestion. The towcar websites are very hit and miss. They were giving a ratio of 93%. But, they had the kerbweight of our Antara completely wrong.

Parker's website lists weights along with all the other details. Many of the tow car matching sites are foreign and the details are for car specs that are not available in the UK.

The Rextons over the last few years have min kerbweights of at least 2100kg. A brand new top of the range Rexton probably costs the same as a 5 year old Q7.

Used to tow with a Rexton and it was an excellent tug.

Now tow with a Touareg, and it's in a different league.

i have a .....shogun a 2014 SG4

its an awesome towcar but a rangerover it is not...

but i like it.

i looked at Touaregs bacause i could get one for the same price as the shogun but i wanted 7 seats and a huge boot.

it has a payload of 1000kgs, not many cars offer that. it can tow upto 3300kg and with a kerb weight of 2200kg 85% would be 1870kg

i can carry 3 adult bikes on the spare wheel. an inflatable boat and outboard motor in the boot. an awning in the boot and still tow may caravan up steep gradients without slowing down.

its a much bigger vehicle than the Touareg.

the shogun may well be outside the requirments of the OP and they may not appreciate the fuel economy and agricultural nature. the Agricultural nature though does make it robust and if you have a mk4 there are very few reported problems.

Whatever we choose will be “my” car as I tend not to need one very often. Work, town and supermarket are all less than a mile from home. If I want to go into either of our local cities then I get the bus as it is cheaper than car park fees!
So criteria is to tow the van within all the recommended limits.
All other values such as tax, insurance, economy, cost then start to add on. So if a larger vehicle is cheaper to run then that would be ok. I don’t mean fuel economy if it’s a gas guzzler but cheaper in other ways that’s ok. I mean servicing and repairs.

And I may still just go seasonal as we tend to go to the same area all the time. Our main holiday is in USA with our grandkids but it’s not a holiday, so like to go away a lot of week ends over the summer, and maybe Christmas. We stay within 2 hours of home, at towing speed.

go and see a shogun, i see from the other thread you are looking at land cruisers. they are as big if not bigger than the shogun and have a very underpowered engine, unless you buy a big engined model. but if you dont need the size and agricultual capability the Touareg is probably more up your street. i think land cruisers are on a par with the shogun in terms of agriculturalness. the Touareg is not really an "offroader" like the shogun and landcruiser.

The difference is that cars like the Land Cruiser and Shogun are essentially commercial/agricultural vehicles first and cars second. They're built specifically to go off-road and to tow heavy weights, so if that's what you're going to be using it for then fine. However, the compromise is poor levels of comfort, refinement, fuel economy etc (basically most of what you might look for in a car) on the road.

Cars like the Touareg and Q7 are luxury cars that just happen to have some off-road capability. So they'll be much nicer to drive and - repairs aside - probably cheaper to run. But they won't be anywhere near as capable off-road and if something does break, probably more expensive to repair.

Is there any reason for having left the Volvo XC90 off your list? I understand that they're highly rated as both family cars and tow cars (if not brilliant off-road) and there are lots of them about.

Thanks, I was looking at the list of cars that came up able to tow the new van from the caravan club matching site. I didn’t see the Volvo on the list but I will check it out.

Soooooo, still no build date so we have gone from May to June to July, I asked can I have a different van, no problem, so we are now getting same layout in single axle and under 85% kerbweight ratio. Job done and £12 000 cheaper plus no £45 000 car to buy!!
I should have made the decision weeks ago!
