Have you looked at an older Kia Sorrento? Pretty sure it won't do the MPG you mentioned, but I think it covers the other requirement and should be available for the sort of money you mentioned.

Hi again Colin,
I've had a Volvo V70 and a C70 convertible. They have exactly the same seats and I think it's fair to say I've never, ever, sat in more comfortable cars.
The E-Class though is considerably higher, and if you avoid a sunroofed car they have very high headroom which means you can raise the seat height (probably electronically) to make the apparent height even better.
Though the Volvos had it in terms of ultimate comfort the E-CLass is still very good indeed.
The advert I posted was an example rather than a specific recommendation, but I do recommend you go see one and have a sit in it.
Yes the Volvos are extremely comfortable. I certainly haven't ruled out the E Class, and I will indeed go and take a look if I find one reasonably close to hand. Problem is largely one of limited finances. I can't afford to keep traipsing all over the place to view cars that turn out to be in considerably worse condition than my Volvo, even though they are newer. I'll end up spending all my money on travelling rather than buying.
------------- Best Regards,
Colin

Yes I like the look of the Sorento, and I have looked at several online that I could afford, but they do seem a bit thirsty compared to my Volvo, and when I look at where they are they all tend to be hundreds of miles away. Nobody seems to be selling anything suitable, and affordable, within 100 miles of where I live, and I don't fancy keep doing 300 mile round trips to see clapped out piles of junk.

Thanks MITIE1. I've just taken a look at the spec for these cars, and they are probably overkill for me. It appears they are rather expensive to tax (£540), or at least the automatic version is, and I only ever have autos. I don't really need a car that heavy-duty, as my caravan only weighs about a ton. The Terracan is a bit on the thirsty side too. On a run with my caravan on, my Volvo will do nearer 38mpg, about the same as it does solo around town. Without the caravan I can get nearly 50mpg on a good motorway run.
Looks like a great car for someone with a large heavy caravan though.

Colin

Hi Tom, that's interesting that your Terracan is only £315 a year tax. The site I used for my research (Parkers) is obviously inaccurate. What is the fuel consumption like?
The Passat would be no good, as the main reason I am thinking of changing is because I want something with a higher driving position. I have driven a Passat, and they are no higher than my Volvo, which I have had now for 9 years. That's the other reason for changing, I fancy a change. However, the Volvo is a very hard act to follow.

Colin

Hi Tom, diesel auto is definitely what I am looking for, and I certainly like the look of the Terracan, but I am wondering if I could live with that fuel consumption. My Volvo does about 38 running around town, or towing the caravan on a run, or 48 - 50 solo on the motorway. It's a 2.5 TDI auto.

Colin
