I have a 2017 X-Trail 4wd with the 1.6L diesel.
The claim is that it has as much torque as the old 2L.
Nissan claim it will tow up to 2000kg which is I think
more than a little optimistic and a great deal more than its kerb weight.
I have yet to test its performance, but my son has an identical model and tows a caravan with 1500kg all up, and loves it.
Thats a lot more more than us oldies are thinking of towing.

I must admit an older (2004 - 2007) X trail is high on my list of possible replacements for my old Volvo V70. Only thing is I want a diesel automatic, and there are VERY few of them for sale at a price I can afford, and the ones that do occasionally crop up are nearly always at least 150 miles away! However, as my Volvo has just passed its MOT again, I may decide to keep it another year.

Beware of the 1.6L automatic X Trails.

The auto gearbox is not so clever and restricts the towing capacity to a max of 1500kg as opposed to the manual which is 2000kg.
The 2L is a little better at 1650kg max.

This is why we settled for a manual.
Just getting used to wiggling a stick again after my last 3 cars which were all autos.

Hi we looked at Quashqai and although it would tow our van 1300 Kgs MTPLM, the kerbweight of the vehicle was too low.

for 1300 Kgs you need a kerb weight of 1530 Kgs apprx, and not many car achieve this for an guideline of 85% weight ration to car....
Previous cars have been :-

Ford Focus KB 1429Kgs EST 2.0 TDCI (1200 KG for the van)
Volvo V70 Est KB 1710 Kgs 2.0ltr D
VX Antara KB 1790 Kgs 2.2 4x4 TDCI
VX Insignia KB 1710 Kgs 2.0 SRI Auto EST.
Of all the Focus and Antara towed the best.
All pulliung our Adria Altea 542 UK MTPLM 1300 KGS

No way I would go back to a manual after all these years. I had quite enough stick-wiggling when I was a coach driver. Very few automatic coaches back then. I would definitely be looking at a 2 litre X Trail though, even though my caravan is only around 1000kg.
