They love them in France, seen loads of them pulling caravans that look far too heavy to be pulled by them.

My uncle had one about 25 years ago and it was pretty unreliable- ended up taking it back to the dealer and getting his money back, I’m sure they have come on a lot since then but still wouldn’t get one.

Your dad had a Duster 25 years ago? Time traveller, is he? If you mean the ARO 10 - totally different car. The current Duster has been around since 2019. My wife is trading in her 6 year old one today. It did over 30k km per year for 6 years and the only repair was a starter motor under warranty.

They tested a mid range one in this months CMC magazine. The current model has been updated and quality improved.
4x4 version pretty capable off road apparently.
If buying, I would prefer the new Suzuki Jimny, but quite a waiting list for them.

wasnt the Dacia Duster in the 80s a Matra-simca rancho?

i hired a Dacia duster in france a few years ago and it was ok seemed quite modern and drove ok. the thing that did impress me was the built in sat nav it seemed to work well and whan i needed to find a petrol station and airport hotel near bordeux showed all the POI on the map. i was told that in france there is a waiting list for dusters.

i dont really understand the logic behind CAMC tow car of the year though. one of the cars they featured this year was a Jaguar E pace that could only tow 750kg yet they gave it a rave review. VW seem to always get rave reviews yet some of the models lack the kerbweight to tow most caravans. as a mitsubishi owner i was saddened to see they didnt give a favourable review to the PHEV or the shogun sport. i guess it comes down to who buys the editor the best crate of wine at christmas.

agai though the Duster doesnt really have the stats to be a great tow car so they have to split the categories up to weight categories and even though the duster may be fantastic for a 1100kg 2 berth it wont cut the mustard with a 6 berth.

And they [Skoda] made the Bren gun :)

Skoda were the main arms manufacturer of Austria, equivalent to Krupps of Germany. They made some monster artillery in both World Wars, and tanks, as well as the Bren Gun (named after the city of Brno). They had made cars too, but cheap post-war cars must have been quite a come-down.

Austria, or more correctly Austria-Hungary, was until 1919 an empire which included the provinces which then became (until 1992) Czechoslovakia. It was to re-integrate Czechoslovakia into Austria that Hitler invaded it in 1938, Austria being at that time (as in WW1) a close ally of Germany. Hitler was Austrian himself of course. Before WW1 Austria-Hungary was a far greater world power than present day Austria, and even had a powerful navy.

Had a 4x2 laureate for 3 years and changed it for a 4x2 prestige last year.I tow a Xplore 304 and have no problems. If I went for a larger caravan I would probably have to go for a 4x4 as it has a higher towing limit.

Well as I am approaching state retirement age in 5 years time, I am forever thinking what happens when I hand the company car back.

A BEV by that time will probably be beyond my reach, especially one that can tow a small caravan, no more than 1,200kg I am thinking.

Anyway, the Dacia Duster came to mind, mainly because for a new car it’s cheap, but I find it hard to believe that the Dacia Duster Bi-Fuel model with it’s 1lt engine is rated to tow 1,300kg can this possibly be true, or is it a typo in the spec.

Even for unbraked towing the spec is 660kg which is not to shabby at all.

To be fair my intention would be to tow a small caravan down to the South of France, and leave it there in storage, so it’s not like I am planning to tour Europe for months on end in my dotage.

I checked them all and decided to buy the 1.3 TCE petrol version.
I looked at the dual fuel but there are so few LPG stations near me and are getting more scarce I discounted it,also the MPG is no better than the 1.3 and is, as described in autocar mag "glacially slow"!
Another factor is that LPG cars aren't allowed in the channel tunnel.

Duster is still available with 1.5litre diesel which would be my choice for towing. Bi fuel Duster has lpg tank in place of where the spare wheel would normally go so certainly not my choice. I quite like the Duster & the diesel version would tow my 1 tonne caravan ok I reckon. Not looking to change my diesel Berlingo for a few yrs yet though. Good thing about both Citroen & Dacia if you drive in France you are never more than a few miles from a garage who can fix it if it goes wrong.

Yep billy, the Diesel would seem the best to go for, but I am looking five years ahead.

Looking at Motorpoint prices for the Dacia Duster 1.6 petrol a one year model with around 7k miles on the clock is going for £10k that’s a good saving on new at £15k.

The 1.6 petrol is not Bi-Fuel though, which is a pity, but as you mentioned the LPG tank goes we’re the spare would have been, which has given me something to think about.

I still like the idea of Bi-Fuel as it gives similar economy to that of a diesel.
