Cons:
Fuel economy. With lots of coasting and feather like foot on the accelerator I can get 34mpg average with a following wind. The engine is unrefined although last few years models have extra sound deadening. Towing my van at best 18mpg, average 16.4mpg.
The seats can be uncomfortable on long journeys I find them hard.
Upgraded battery as oem part seemed to be a weight saver/smaller and kept going flat.
Air con pipes have corroded and have been replaced. New front discs needed due to callipers seizing and overheating them. Piston kit for callipers two years ago. The salt gets to them. Seals going again on pistons so new callipers in a couple of weeks.
All four tyres needed changing. 2mm tread difference between front and rear caused diff wind. Had to change the fronts a week later - problem solved.
Would I have another. Yes. I’m not changing it as I reckon it could easily do 180000 as long as it’s serviced regularly. Cheap motoring for a big car.
Quite like look of Tuareg or XC90 but not their prices.
It has been a good car. Never been stuck at the side of the road.

We sometimes get 20mpg towing with a following wind.

It's not so much the MPG when towing that scares me as we only go away with caravan once or possibly twice a month if we are lucky and we see it as a treat so save money for them trips. It's the general day to day running of such a huge vehicle. I'm beginning to really want one now though so I already think I'm sold.

Before you commit yourself have a look at a Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD 3.0L automatic preferably post 2011 Overland as it has the air suspension which makes a very big difference to towing. Towing our 2000kg caravan we can get almost 23mpg and when solo easily 34mpg or better on the motorway. Comfortable seats and lots of little toys to play with like heated seats and steering wheel. Make sure it has a full service history and you should be okay.

Just looked on Autotrader, more expensive than Mitsis, we don't find ours too bad for day to day running around but it depends how far you go, ours is used for shopping and taking the dogs out, all local.

Hi Ian, I think Mrs Vince is correct. They are more expensive than the Shoguns. Very nice looking though.

That's ok, are you looking to buy privately or through a dealer? we bought this one privately, put a 30 mile radius in Autotrader and it came up with the car we bought at Henley on Thames which is more than 30 miles away, but glad it did.

Most probably a dealer as it gives a little 'come back' if things go wrong.

I've started looking and will be buying anytime after Xmas/new year when I'm hoping garages will be crying out for sales ?!?

Reason being is that the Shogun is no longer available new and with the Jeep you get a lot more bang for your buck. Take a Jeep for test drive and you may be pleasantly surprised and then take a Shogun for a drive.

We paid £17k last Oct for our 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD Overland Summit which has air suspension. It had a full dealership service history and 45k on the clock.
I am sure you can find one for a test drive. BTW there are a number of active Jeep forums to get updates. I hope I am not sounding pushy but would hate someone else to make the same mistake as us.

Shogun is a good tough reliable beast, saw quite a few in Australia towing.
Other tough beast is the Toyota Land Cruiser, very popular all over the world, but not to easy to come by here. LR more popular.

We have had 3 Kia Sorentos and now have a Hyundai Santa Fe. All very reliable and excellent tow cars.

We considered a LR Discovery Sport, but the Hyundai was much better equipped, more horsepower and 5 year warranty, no brainer really!
Jeep and LR do not score highly in reliability top 10!

My mate has just bought a used Range Rover sport V6, its a lovely car and superb tug, just hope its a good one.

I had a Shogun not long ago... A 3.2 LWB auto.

Had the 'cat' nicked, but didn't replace it for it just to get nicked again and put a straight pipe through in it's place. Then fitted a K&N drop in panel air filter come service time.... For some reason, the truck loved that! It seemed to 'breathe' so much better, and I got a decent improvement in MPG! So having the cat nicked did me a favor!

With it being the LWB, I found it VERY comfy. And not 'bucky' like a short wheel based truck.

Fitted it with Cooper AT3's that was recommended to me as they're great on and off road - and last for miles, and even though they were quite chunky, they weren't noisy.

Look after the servicing and it'll look after you!

Especially if it's an auto and you're towing...

You need a specific ATF, and not an 'off the shelf' one! Millers Millermatic SpIII-WS is what I used.

Biggest problem I had was RUST!!!

Rear wheel arches, sills, and ABS sensor rings got it badly with mine.

Treated the sills and arches with rust prevention, but it got too much in the end.

ABS sensor light can come on making you think you have an ABS problem. Check the 'teeth' in the sensor rings, and if they look like 'stumps', that's your first port of call. If the problem persists, then it's a sensor.

Rear suspension arms can seize so when you look under from the rear, you'll see the wheels are stuck in a negative camber position.

Use the correct coolant too. As the block can rust on the inside, blocking the waterways and causing head failure.

And as said before, air con pipes fail causing your air con to go off. And the pipes seemed to be harder to find than hens teeth!

I see in the comments everyone mentions MPG too...

But no one has said, if you buy a big 4x4, you DON'T worry / complain about MPG, so why go on about MPG...???

Got rid of mine* as I changed jobs and no longer needed a 4x4, as her new lease car became the tow car...

*Exported to Zimbabwe of all things!!!!

Had two a 13 and a 16 plate, and would have another if they still made them. Superb vehicle, true old-school beast of a vehicle, tow an office block up a scree slope. Easily got 25mpg when towing and had one small reliability issue in 6 years.
Swapped for a Santa Fe which is superb but I will never love it, I still miss the shoguns. I found the seats comfortable. I had the corroded aircon pipes but its not expensive to fix. As said previously get one with service history and keep it maintained and should do 250000 without engine issues.
The other thing is if you need parts there is a superb aftermarket availability for suspension, brakes, service parts, wheels, tyres,and a ton of mods. Tyres are common size and cheap for the size (as someone else has suggested I tried the Coopers which were good and also Yokohamas which again were good).

They are a sadly dying breed with no new ones and the ones in the trade are often exported to eastern Europe or Africa where their rugged abilities are legendary and attract strong prices.
