My one is jan 02 estate. clutch is snatchy but got used to it. does 50mpg solo and 37 towing sprite major. hills no problem. Find its better in lower gears and use a few more revs, always use first gear if you can, and goes like *********...

We have an 03 Mondeo, tdci Ghia X automatic so no problem with the clutch.
I use it for getting to workd and back every day (4 miles each way!) and when holidays come around all 5 of us plus the dog can fit in. It tows the van well (Elddis Firestorm 505).
It has a tiptronic gearbox which we only use when towing. If we feel it hasn't changed gear quickly enough we can easily just knock it up or down a gear. My husband has a problem with his left knee and a clutch gives him grief, but this is an ideal compromise.
It's a very comfy car, very easy drive. Don't get high mpg on my low mileage, especially with every electrical device invented being used every morning (don't like to be cold) but we can get 50mpg+ on a run, and lower 30s when towing.
We like it, but may change next year for a 4x4 as I think we will need a bigger caravan as the kids keep growing!

the goal for us is a 2.2 tdci (155bhp) ghia x estate in a year or so.this has self levelling suspension, traction control the lot....reckon once the new Mondy comes out in June the prices of the MK3`s will plummet.the 2.0tddi we have now is adequate for towing but i wouldnt attempt anything heavier on the back than what we have now.superb drive solo, quick, sharp handling, comfy, loads of room and above all superb on the juice.reckon on 600 miles + on a tank of diesel if you drive sensibly.

Hi,

My 130ps tdci Estate has now done 70k miles, clutch has stopped smelling and no major problems have come up. Climate control is now a bit dicky but that's all.

May go for the new Estate or an S-Max at the end of the year.

Not bad for 70k! Mine has done only 8k. At what mileage did the clutch smell start?

Hi, the car was new and the first time out with the caravan I thought that the bloomi'n thing was about to catch fire!

Burning clutch has a lingering effect inside a new car and a can of Oust came in really handy.

I have to say I have had no bad smell incident for a good while now, maybe it was just the newness wearing off. (Or more likely I have learnt how to avoid taking an hour of to-ing and fro-ing to park the van!)

Anyway, I can really recommend the car.

Our clutch went really smelly when trying to reverse uphill in muddy conditions with the 'van on the back, not ideal we now know.  We left the 'van on site and got the car checked out before towing again and its been fine. Now we just don't over exert it.
